John McCarthy, who was a co-captain on last year's national champion men's ice hockey team at Boston University, made his National Hockey League deubt on Saturday night with the San Jose Sharks in their home contest against the Detroit Red Wings.
McCarthy is the fourth Terrier from last year's NCAA title team to reach the NHL ranks, joining Matt Gilroy (NY Rangers), Brandon Yip (Colorado) and Colin Wilson (Nashville).
After recording 18 points (6g, 12a) and a team-best plus-14 rating in 36 games with the Worcester Sharks of the AHL, McCarthy got the call-up to San Jose on Thursday before dressing for Saturday's contest, during which he tallied one shot in 11:06 of ice time.
McCarthy tallied 45 points (14g, 31a) in 154 career games at BU and saved his best season for last, as the forward put up 29 points on six goals and 23 helpers as a senior to bolster a Terrier team that went 35-6-4 en route to its fifth national title.
