Former Boston University standout Nick Bonino recorded his first goal in the National Hockey League on Monday evening when he opened the scoring with a power-play goal to help the Anaheim Ducks earn a 3-1 home victory over the Dallas Stars.
Bonino knocked home a puck in the slot on assists from Teemu Selanne and Corey Perry at 8:11 of the second period to break a scoreless deadlock and kick off a run of three Anaheim goals in just over five minutes. Bonino was named the first star of the game for his tally.
After celebrating with a fist pump, Bonino was first met in the celebration huddle by team captain Scott Niedermayer. Selanne, who was honored prior to the game for scoring his 600th career goal last week, rushed to the net after Bonino's goal to grab the puck and handed it to Bonino in front of the Ducks' bench.
Bonino made his NHL debut on Friday in a 3-2 win at Edmonton. He signed with the Ducks last Sunday after finishing up his junior campaign at BU by leading the team in scoring with 38 points (11g, 27a) in 33 games. He became the fifth player from last year's NCAA championship team to play in the NHL, joining Matt Gilroy (NY Rangers), John McCarthy (San Jose), Colin Wilson (Nashville) and Brandon Yip (Colorado).
This past weekend, Bonino was interviewed by Ducks' radio color analyst Dan Wood for the team website. The "Duck Cast" can be accessed by clicking here.
