BOSTON - Led by two victories from senior Kristen Connors, the Boston University women's swimming & diving team dropped its season opener to Houston, 164.5-135.5, on Friday afternoon at the Competition Pool.
A breaststroke specialist, Connors captured the 50-yard (29.80) and 200-yard (2:20.89) events and also teamed with sophomore Kendra Cheng, senior Amanda Schmitz and freshman Alexsa Savage to open the dual meet with a four-second victory over the Cougars in the 400-yard medley relay at 3:53.04.
The other three swimmers also tasted victory in individual races. Cheng led a BU sweep in the 50-yard backstroke (26.73), as senior Francesca Ferrante and junior Kara Zebrowski finished second and third, respectively. Cheng also posted the Terriers' top time in the 100-yard freestyle at 53.05 for third place.
Schmitz won the 200 butterfly (2:07.75) and took second in the 400IM with a time of 4:35.08, 4.54 seconds behind Houston's Reka Kovacs. In her first meet as a Terrier, Savage won the 200 back (2:06.93) and missed out on the 50 free by 0.4 seconds for second place.
A member of Conference USA, Houston won 10 events, including thrilling victories in the 50 fly and 1000 free. In the second event of the day, the Cougars' Heather Winn went neck and neck with sophomore Meaghan Grimes and won the 1000 free by 0.59 seconds with a time of 10:21.11. Later on, UH's Heather Coutts posted a time of 26.98 with junior Lauren Drake just behind at 27.03 in the 50 fly.
UH widened the gap in the team score by taking the top three spots in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. The Cougars sealed the team victory by winning the 200 free relay against the Terriers by a close margin of 1:37.18 to 1:37.44.
BU will have little time to rest, as the women will travel with the men to UMass on Saturday (Oct. 15). The meet will begin at 1 p.m.
