BOSTON - With 1:15 remaining in the first overtime, freshman Dominique Badji headed in a cross from sophomore Anthony Ciccone to give the Boston University men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. With their fifth victory in six games, the Terriers (7-6-0, 3-1-0 AE) move above .500 for the first time since winning the season opener at Holy Cross.
In a contest that both teams had multiple opportunities to score in regulation, America East Player of the Game Badji found an opening from a few yards out for his third score of the season and BU's first golden goal since a 3-2 win over Albany on Oct. 31, 2009. Coincidentally, all three of his goals have resulted from headers, and his last one was off a cross from Ciccone to defeat Hartford two weeks prior.
Freshman Nick Thomson continued his stellar play at goal with four saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season and lower his goals against average to 0.74. His counterpart, Stefan Manz, tallied two saves, as the Seawolves (6-5-3, 2-1-1 AE) finished with a 14-12 advantage in shots and 7-4 edge in corners.
Badji had a game-high four shots, while SBU's America East Player of the Game Leonardo Fernandes recorded three attempts along with Christian Quevedo.
Before concluding the season with three remaining America East contests, the Terriers will host No. 14 Boston College in the final non-conference game on Tuesday (Oct. 18) at 7 p.m. The Eagles will mark the fifth ranked opponent for BU this year.
