BOSTON - UMBC scored off a counter attack in the 73rd minute and stopped three shots from the Boston University men's soccer team to earn a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Seeing its three-game winning streak snapped, the Terriers drop to 5-6-0 and 1-1 in league play, while the Retrievers improve to 5-3-3 (2-0 AE).
BU dominated possession for much of the contest but found itself down a goal when it turned the ball over while bringing it up near midfield. America East Player of the Game Kingsley Onwuka picked up the loose ball and found Pete Caringi on the right side. Caringi immediately one-timed the ball back to Kingsley, as a defender moved toward him. Kingsley scurried through the two defenders and fired past freshman Nick Thomson for the score at 72:06.
The Terriers had an open look at net six minutes later, but while trying to get off a quick shot inside the box, senior Ben Berube lifted it over the crossbar. BU had two more attempts at 84:56 and 85:07, but UMBC's defense blocked both and then a minute later prevented the Terriers from attempting a shot off two corner kicks.
Named BU's America East Player of the Game, senior Stephen Knox led the Terriers with five shots, including three on goal. His best chance of scoring happened 30 seconds into the contest when dribbling up the right side toward the box, he fired one that Dan Louisignau dove to stop for the save.
After holding an 8-5 advantage in shots at the half, the Terriers finished ahead, 12-11, with an 8-3 lead in corner kicks. Thomson recorded two saves at net, while Louisignau posted three.
BU will next hit the road for Vermont on Wednesday (Oct. 12). Action is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
