BOSTON - In front of an energized crowd of 3,235 fans, St. John's scored in the 34th minute and held off a late Boston University men's soccer team charge for the 1-0 victory on Saturday night at Nickerson Field during the fifth annual Terrier Tailgate. Dropping its home opener, the Terriers fall to 1-2, while the Red Storm (2-1) earns its second consecutive win after a 3-0 victory at No. 8 William & Mary.
To break the scoreless tie, the Red Storm's Jack Bennett dribbled up the left side through multiple defenders and fired a shot that rolled toward the far post past a diving Nick Thomson to give St. John's the go-ahead lead at 33:06. Rafael Diaz never recorded a save against the Terriers, as the Red Storm finished the contest with a 17-10 advantage in shot attempts.
Named America East Player of the Game, senior Stephen Knox posted a team-high three shots, including one at 14:28 that flew over the net. Freshman Dominique Badji was close 17 minutes later when he received a pass in the middle of the box from senior Ben Berube. Making a quick turnaround, he flicked the ball a tad too high for the missed attempt.
Three minutes into the second half, Berube narrowly missed a dribbler toward the far post on the right side. He attempted one of BU's three shots in the final five minutes, but St. John's backline blocked each of them to improve to 5-3 all-time in the series.
A freshman, Thomson had four saves, including one in the 62nd minute when Connor Lade rifled an attempt from 35 yards out. Both squads finished with four corner kicks.
Continuing their three-game homestand against the Big East, the Terriers will next host Seton Hall on Friday (Sept. 9) at 7 p.m.
