BOSTON - After concluding a two-game homestand with a 3-0 victory over Adelphi, the Boston University men's soccer team will travel to America East foe Stony Brook on Friday (Oct. 5) with first kick set for 7 p.m.
The Terriers (3-5-3, 0-0-1 AE) own an 8-3 record in the all-time series against the Seawolves (7-2-1, 1-0-0 AE) dating back to 2001 and have won the last five games, including a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory last year at Nickerson Field. Sophomore Dominique Badji headed in the game winner off a cross from junior Anthony Ciccone with just 1:15 remaining in the extra session.
BU has scored nine of its 14 goals this season in the last four contests and Ciccone has served as a key contributor. After assisting on the game-winning goal at then-No. 10 Boston College, he went five contests without an assist until facing Holy Cross. Over the last four games, he has recorded five assists with two helpers coming against both the Crusaders and Adelphi.
Redshirt-freshman Mac McGuire and senior Michael Bustamante have tallied three goals each during the last four games and will try to create a lead for a defense that is coming off its third shutout of the season. After allowing six goals in the first three games, sophomore Nick Thomson has averaged just one goal allowed over the last eight contests. He holds a 0.745 save percentage and posted four saves in the 3-0 win over Adelphi.
Stony Brook is riding a six-game unbeaten streak with a 4-0 victory over Buffalo and a 1-0 win at Albany. Missing 2011 America East Defender of the Year Kelvin Madzongwe due to injury, BU's defense will have its hands full trying to contain Leonardo Fernandes, a Hermann Award watch list member who has seven goals and four assists for a team-high 18 points. Alejandro Fritz is second with nine points off three goals and three assists.
On the defensive end, Stony Brook has shut out five squads with two goalkeepers sharing netminding duties. Stefan Manz (5-0-1) has started six contests and has a 0.48 GAA and a 0.864 save percentage, while Carlos Villa (2-2-0) has a 1.73 GAA and 0.708 save percentage.
Following the game, the Terriers will return home and next host Vermont on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
