PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite junior Dominique Badji tallying his second goal of the year and classmate Nick Thomson recording eight saves, the Boston University men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at Brown on Tuesday night.
Competing in the final non-conference game of the season, the Terriers fall to 3-5-1, while the Bears improve to 3-4-1 behind their second straight win.
Brown was coming off a 5-0 victory over Marist and only needed 1:36 to score the first goal. Jack Kuntz sent a cross into the box for Jack Gorab to head past Thomson. The Terriers quickly responded four minutes later when senior Vicente Colmenares played a long ball down the left side during a counter attack for the speedy Badji to collect and fire past the diving keeper.
The goal snapped a three-game shutout streak for the offense. BU nearly scored again at 10:24 off a header from freshman Felix De Bona, but Josh Weiner was in position to make the stop. Junior Cameron Souri also put one on goal at 14:26 for Brown to stop.
After withstanding the lengthy BU attack, the Bears grabbed the lead for good at 18:04. Brown played the ball down the left side and took advantage of confusion from the Terriers' backline. A BU defender was knocked down hard, and expecting a whistle, the Terriers momentarily stopped. Jose Salama continued moving toward the goal and sent a cross to Voltaire Escalona for the easy one-timer past a defenseless Thomson.
Nate Pomeroy added a third score for the Bears at 28:36 for the two-goal advantage. The teams entered the locker room tied in shots, 6-6, with Brown owning a 7-4 lead in corner kicks.
BU tried to mount a rally in the second half but was unable to convert on a penalty kick opportunity in the 55th minute. Having already scored one against Hofstra back in September, Badji fired the ball low toward the right post, but Weiner timed it perfectly with his outstretched arms for the diving save.
Sophomore Lucas McBride's attempt was blocked at 60:14, and sophomore Mac McGuire sent one wide at 61:18. With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Badji had a shot blocked by Brown's defense, leading to the Terriers' fifth and final corner of the game. BU was unable to convert, and freshman David Asbjornsson's free kick over the crossbar at 85:22 proved to be the last chance for the Terriers.
Weiner ended the contest with five saves in the victory, as Brown finished ahead in both corners (16-5) and shots (17-12). The Bears have now won four straight against the Terriers and lead the all-time series, 21-14-4.
Concluding a four-game road trip, BU will next resume Patriot League action by visiting Army on Saturday (Oct. 5) at 7 p.m.
