HARTFORD, Conn. – The Boston University women’s basketball team closed out the campus round of the inaugural Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge with a 52-43 victory over Monmouth on Sunday afternoon at the XL Center.
Playing their third game in three days, junior Mollie McKendrick led the Terriers with 14 points and eight rebounds while senior Danielle Callahan totaled 13 points. Freshman Sarah Hope also hit double-digits with 10 points while senior Rashidat Agboola chipped in seven rebounds.
Chevannah Paalvast led the Hawks with 14 points while Helena Kurt chipped in 10 points. Sara English led Monmouth on the boards with five rebounds.
BU finished the game with a 30.0 field goal percentage (18-of-18) and a 25.0 percent clip (7-of-28) from beyond the arc. The Terriers also went 9-for-11 from the free throw line. Monmouth shot 31.3 percent for the game (15-of-48) and 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from the 3-point line. The Hawks went 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Terriers posted a 41-37 advantage in rebounds and scored 22 points off of 22 Hawks’ turnovers.
The teams got off to a slow start with only a combined four points scored in the first four minutes of the game. BU opened up at 9-2 lead with a 7-0 run that took the teams to the under 12 media timeout. The Hawks were held without a field goal for over eight minutes before they got back on the board with a three-point play from Sophie Beaudry.
Callahan earned another seven-point lead for BU with 3-pointer before Monmouth cut its deficit to 14-11, following a jumper from Kurt. The Terriers then used a trio of 3-pointers, including two from Hope, along with a jumper from McKendrick to grab a 25-15 lead that they took into halftime.
After another slow start in the second half, BU used a 9-0 run with points from four different players to open up a 36-20 lead on the Hawks. Monmouth ended the streak with a basket from Palvast and added a trey from Hurt to close the gap to 36-25 at the under eight media taken at 11:20.
Monmouth brought its deficit down to single-digits, 40-31, following a pair of free throws from Shira Schect but it was short-lived, as BU used an 11-2 run to take a 51-32 lead capped by a layup from sophomore Clodagh Scannell with 3:57 remaining in the game .
Paavast netted four free throws for the Hawks and Kurt followed with a trey to make it a 12-point game, 51-39, with 1:22 left in the game. Hope scored the last point of the game for BU from the charity stripe and the Terriers held on to win, 52-43, despite being held without a field goal for the final four minutes.
The inaugural Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge culminates on Sunday (Dec. 1) with a quadruple header of basketball at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The Terriers will face Old Dominion at 12:15 p.m. >
