BOSTON – Senior Rashidat Agboola of the Boston University women’s basketball team was recently selected to participate in the Black Leadership Summit hosted by Teach for America on Dec. 6. The vision for the Summit was to develop and invest in leaders who have leadership skills, passion, motivation and drive to ensure that future generations of students are given the opportunity to receive an excellent education.
The goals of the Summit were to provide leadership development and the opportunity to build lasting relationships with other rising leaders while equipping participants with the tools that they need to make a positive impact in their communities by taking action to create transformational change.
“The leadership summit I attended was one of the most eye-opening, life-changing experiences I have had,” said Agboola. “I have been so fortunate to receive an amazing education all my life and especially now at Boston University and the summit motivated me even more to give back and look to help make change to those who face inequities when it comes to education."
Agboola was selected to attend the Summit along with students from various schools in the Northeast including Brown, Harvard, Yale and Northeastern. The day started at Roxbury Prep School where attendees listened to guest speakers from Teach For America and various employers while getting to know each other and learning more about issues in the Black community surrounding educational inequity. Participants were also able to interact with the students at Roxbury Prep.
The second half of the day allowed participants time for self-reflection on leadership through various exercises to help understand their leadership qualities, strengths and weaknesses and to build off of it.
The day ended with a panel of various teachers and educational professionals that hosted an interactive session with the participants. Each participant was asked to make a commitment to make changes in their community.
