DURHAM, N.H. – Three players scored in double-digits as the Boston University women’s basketball team defeated former America East foe New Hampshire, 69-58, on Sunday afternoon in in Lundholm Gymnasium. The Terriers move to 4-8 on the season while New Hampshire drops to 4-7 on the year.
In a series that dates back to Jan. 21, 1978, BU is now 40-29 all-time against its former conference rival. The Terriers have won 13 straight against the Wildcats.
Senior Danielle Callahan led BU with 17 points while classmate Rashidat Agboola was just shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Sarah Hope also reached double-digits with 11 points while senior Melissa Gallo chipped in nine.
Corinne Coia led UNH with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds while Kelsey Hogan added 14 points.
BU shot 36.5 percent (23-of-63) for the game and went 10-of-27 from beyond the arc. UNH shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field and made just 4-of-17 from the 3-point line. The Terriers converted 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the charity stripe and the Wildcats went 10-of-13 (76.9 percent).
UNH held a 44-41 advantage on the boards. The Wildcats committed 10 turnovers that led to 15 points for the Terriers while BU gave up seven turnovers.
Gallo opened the game with a 3-pointer for the Terriers and BU built a 7-5 lead heading into the first media timeout. Hope sunk her first shot from beyond the arc to extend the Terriers’ lead to five, 12-7, but a 5-0 spurt from the Wildcats knotted the game at 12-12 right before the under-12 media timeout.
Callahan put BU ahead with a trey and then converted a three-point play to give the Terriers a 20-16 lead. Following a timeout at 7:33, Hogan hit a shot from beyond the arc to give the Wildcats their only lead of the first half, 21-20. Their advantage was short-lived, as sophomore Clodagh Scannell drained a 3-pointer on the other end to give the edge back to BU.
The Terriers took a 26-21 lead into the final media timeout of the half but UNH used a 5-0 run to make it a one-point game, 26-25, with 2:29 to play. Gallo and Hope combined for a pair of treys to give BU its largest lead of the first half, 34-27, and force UNH to burn a timeout with 57.1 on the clock. The Wildcats managed a basket in their final possession to send the teams into the break with the Terriers on top, 34-29.
The second half got off to a slow start but the Terriers continued to grow their lead and pushed the advantage to 10 points, 48-48, with a 3-pointer from Scannell with 12:56 on the clock. The Wildcats responded with a 7-0 stretch to pull within three points following a jumper from Hogan.
Agboola hit a pair of free throws and fellow senior Whitney Turner added a layup to give the Terriers some breathing room, but the Wildcats kept it close. A three-point play from Coia with 4:32 to go made it 57-52 in favor of BU, but the Terriers fired back with a jumper from Gallo and trey from Callahan.
Ariel Gaston brought the Wildcats within six, 62-56, with 2:01 on the clock, as UNH resorted to fouling. Callahan went 3-for-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch while freshman Courtney Latham was a perfect 4-for-4. Hogan added a pair of free throws for UNH in the final 30 seconds as BU claimed the 69-58 victory.
The Terriers will close out the non-conference portion of their schedule next Sunday (Dec. 29) at former America East foe Vermont. Tip-off between the Terriers and the Catamounts is set for 2 p.m. in Burlington, Vt.
