BOSTON - In its last game of 2013, the Boston University women’s basketball team will close out its non-conference schedule against former America East foe Vermont on Sunday (Dec. 29) in Burlington, Vt. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Patrick Gymnasium.
In a series that dates back to Nov. 29, 1978, BU (4-8) owns a 42-30 all-time record against Vermont (4-7). The teams, which were both members of the America East until BU left for the Patriot League last July, have met at least once every season since 1978.
The Terriers have won the last seven meeting against the Catamounts and have not been defeated since Vermont posted a 69-52 triumph on March 7, 2010, in the America East tournament semifinals. Last season, BU defeated Vermont, 58-30, on Jan. 9, in Case Gym and then posted a 56-47 victory on Feb. 13, in Burlington.
For the second straight game, BU will face one of its former America East foes. The Terriers are looking to earn back-to-back victories for the first time this season after defeating New Hampshire, 69-58, last Sunday.
Senior Danielle Callahan leads BU in scoring with 11.4 ppg while classmate Rashidat Agboola is second on the team with 10.3 ppg and leads the Terriers with 6.9 rpg.
Since entering the starting lineup on Dec. 4 at UMass, freshman Sarah Hope is averaging 10.5 ppg in 31.3 mpg. Senior Melissa Gallo earned a spot in the starting lineup on Dec. 14 against Marist and has contributed 10.5 ppg in the last two contests.
BU is averaging 59.2 ppg while shooting 34.3 percent from the field and 30.6 percent from beyond the arc. The Terriers are pulling down 37.1 rpg.
Vermont (4-7) enters Sunday’s game looking to snap a two-game losing streak, as the Catamounts dropped a pair of contests at the Christmas City Classic hosted by Lehigh last weekend. Patriot League member Lehigh defeated Vermont, 87-78, before the Catamounts fell to Youngstown State, 74-67.
BU and Vermont have only had one common opponent thus far in Rhode Island. The Terriers defeated the Rams 51-49, while the Catamounts lost to URI, 63-50.
The Catamounts have three players who average double-digits in scoring with Niki Taylor leading the way with 11.6 ppg. Kylie Butler (11.1) and Kayla Burchill (10.1) rank second and third, respectively, while Butler also leads the team with 7.1 rpg. Vermont has utilized various starting lineups throughout the season, as Jordan Eisler is the only player to start all 11 games.
Vermont averages 70.0 ppg with a 39.5 field goal percentage and a 32.5 percent clip from beyond the arc.
The Terriers will play their first-ever Patriot League game on Thursday (Jan. 2), when BU visits Holy Cross. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Worcester, Mass., and the game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
