BOSTON - Highlighted by a season-high 14 3-pointers and four Terriers scoring in double figures, the Boston University men's basketball team cruised to a 77-65 victory over Binghamton on Wednesday night at Case Gym. With its ninth-straight win over the Bearcats (1-7), the Terriers snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 2-4.
Down 11-6 with 11:49 left in the first half, three different Terriers drained consecutive 3-pointers to spark a 25-5 run over the next eight minutes. BU owned a 34-23 lead at halftime and extended it to as many as 22 (56-34) with 9:53 left in regulation. The Terriers shot a stifling 64.0 percent in the final 20 minutes to roll to the victory.
Sophomore Cedric Hankerson (21 pts.) went 7-of-11 from the field to finish with 20 or more points for the fourth straight game. Both he and junior John Papale (12 pts.) had five assists and two steals apiece, while sophomore Eric Fanning recorded a season-high 14 points and dished out a career-high four assists. Freshman Cheddi Mosely added 10 points, and junior Nathan Dieudonne led the defensive effort with a game-high seven rebounds and two steals.
Binghamton was limited to just 16 points in the paint, as they watched Dusan Perovic score 29 of his school-record 34 points in the second half to keep the final deficit below 20 points. He went 6-of-8 in 3-point territory and added five rebounds. Romello Walker posted 12 points and six rebounds in the loss.
The Bearcats were making their visit to BU since Jan. 2013 when both teams were members in the America East. Walker opened the contest with the first of Binghamton's eight treys to grab the early lead. Leading 7-6 at 13:33, Bobby Ahearn and Marlon Beck II hit back-to-back jumpers to extend the advantage back to five points.
Papale, Hankerson and Fanning followed with three straight 3-pointers to push the Terriers ahead for good. Karon Waller cut the deficit to three, but Fanning came right back with a layup to keep the momentum on BU's side. Hankerson and Papale added two more bombs apiece to give the Terriers the 34-23 halftime lead.
Perovic opened the second stanza with a layup to bring Binghamton back within single digits, but on the next possession, he fouled Hankerson on the made layup attempt. After Hankerson hit the free throw, Dieudonne hit a 3-pointer and used a steal to set up Mosely for the easy fastbreak layup at 17:53.
Mosely and junior Justin Alston pushed the advantage to over 20 points (49-28) for the first time at 15:07 behind a 3-pointer and slam dunk, respectively. Freshman Will Goff extended the lead to a game-high 22 points (56-34) at 9:53. Perovic tried to mount a rally with three treys and a pair of contested jumpers over the following four minutes, but the Terriers had an answer each time to maintain the comfortable lead.
BU finished 28-of-54 (.519), including 14-of-28 (.500) from behind the arc, and out-rebounded Binghamton, 31-28. The Terriers also had 27 bench points after being shut out this past Sunday and converted 15 Binghamton turnovers into 21 points. The Bearcats finished 22-of-49 (.449), as they suffered their fifth consecutive double-digit defeat to BU.
They Terriers will next conclude their three-game homestand on Saturday (Dec. 6) against St. Peter's at 2 p.m.
