CLEARWATER, Fla. - Eight Terriers combined for a season-high 18 hits and freshman Makinna Akerspitched her first career complete game, as the Boston University softball team run-ruled Providence, 10-2, on Sunday morning in the final game of the USF Under Armour Showcase. Scoring in double figures for the third time this season, the Terriers improve to 6-8, while the Big East's Friars drop to 0-5.
BU jumped out on top with five runs in the opening two innings before scoring five more unanswered runs in the final two for the first run-rule victory of the season. Senior Chelsea Kehr tied a personal best with four hits on four at-bats, highlighted by two doubles and a team-high three RBIs. Six other teammates had at least two hits apiece to help the Terriers run away for the victory.
In the circle, Akers (2-1) limited Providence to six hits with a fifth-inning solo home run being the lone extra-base hit. She recorded five strikeouts against one walk.
With runners at first and second in the bottom of the opening inning, Kehr smashed a double down the left field line to plate freshman Brittany Younan and senior Brittany Clendenny. She then scored what would prove to be the game-winning run on a two-out RBI single by junior Emily Felbaum.
Clendenny and Kehr followed with back-to-back RBI singles in the second to extend the lead to 5-0. The Friars tried to mount a rally with a run in the third and fifth off a combined three hits, but the Terriers went right back on the attack.
Kehr led off with a double, and pinch runner Rachel Levine then scored on junior Mandy Fernandez's double to center field. Felbaum followed with her second RBI single of the game to push the lead back to five.
In the bottom of the sixth, BU ended the game with three runs off four hits. Senior Amy Ekart and junior Kendra Meadows hit consecutive RBI singles. Ekart ended the game when she reached home on a throwing error by the catcher, as Meadows stole second.
The Terriers will continue their Spring Break trip in Clearwater, Fla., on Tuesday (March 11) at 11 a.m. against Quinnipiac with a rematch against Cleveland State set for 1:15 p.m.
