Softball Stages Fifth-Inning Rally to Defeat Lehigh, 6-3
March 28, 2026 | Softball
BOSTON – Boosted by senior Brooke Deppiesse's grand-slam homer, the Boston University softball team rallied to open the Patriot League weekend series with a 6-3 home victory over Lehigh Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (25-10, 4-0 PL) scored all six runs in the fifth to overcome a two-run deficit against the Mountain Hawks (16-15, 0-4 PL) and extend their active win streak to 18 games. Senior Kasey Ricard (17-5) claimed her fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season with 10 strikeouts earned over the first six innings, and classmate Haley Ganino induced the final three outs to help BU increase the home win streak to 16 contests.

Senior Kasey Ricard (17-5) claimed her fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season with 10 strikeouts earned over the first six innings, and classmate Haley Ganino induced the final three outs to help BU increase the home win streak to 16 contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After both teams stranded a runner at second in the first inning, BU led off the second with a walk but again came up empty, as Lehigh earned three fly outs.
- The Mountain Hawks scored the game's first run by taking advantage of the Terriers' two-out defensive miscue with Peyton Sward delivering an RBI triple to left center.
- Ricard finished the top of the fourth with her sixth strikeout, and Lehigh turned a double play on a line out to second to end the bottom half.
- After Ricard started the fifth with back-to-back strikeouts, Kelly Fricker jumped on the first pitch for a solo homer and 2-0 lead.
- Lehigh followed with a walk and stolen base, but Ricard earned her ninth strikeout to keep the deficit at two runs.
- The first eight Terriers to take the plate all successfully got on base with a combined three hits, four walks and and a hit-by-pitch.
- Junior Kyomi Apalit started off the rally by singling through the left side, taking second on classmate Livia Christopher's walk and scoring on sophomore Kieren McHugh's pinch-hit RBI double down the right field line.
- Freshman Irys Kline then battled to earn a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch to set up Deppiesse's grand slam on the first pitch to left to pull ahead, 5-2.
- After BU loaded the bases for the second time on two walks and a hit-by-pitch, Apalit earned an RBI with a grounder to third for the 6-2 advantage.
- Lehigh stayed in the game by earning a strikeout and ground out.
- The Mountain Hawks tried to mount a rally with a single and pair of walks, but Ricard kept the 6-2 lead with her 10th strikeout.
- In the seventh, Fricker led off with a single to prompt a change in the circle and Lizzie Kern later recorded a two-out RBI double against Ganino, who then sealed the victory on ground out.
- BU and Lehigh will conclude the weekend series on Sunday with the doubleheader set for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
