BOSTON - After 84 minutes of scoreless action, Brown headed in the game-winning goal off a free kick to defeat the No. 23 Boston University men's soccer team, 1-0, on Sunday night at Nickerson Field in front of 2,282 fans. Participating in the eighth-annual Terrier Tailgate, the Terriers drop to 2-2-0, while the Bears move to 1-1-0.

Averaging 18.7 shots in the first three games, BU's offense was held in check in the first half, as the Terriers were unable to get off a shot attempt. Brown pressured every second and played a high backline.

Starting in a 4-5-1, BU almost got on the board though in the 21st minute. Following its first of four corner kicks in the half, the Terriers had the ball outside the top of the box. Junior Richie Robinson sent a through ball past the defense to senior Sanford Spivey for what appeared to be an easy goal, but Spivey broke too soon and was called offsides.

Senior Nick Thomson tallied three saves to keep the score even, 0-0, at the half. In the 16th minute, he moved into perfect position to stop a hard header from Tim Whalen.

During the second half, BU opened up the field with an extra sriker and finished with eight shot attempts. Senior Dominique Badji started in the 47th minute with a header that went above the crossbar. Sophomore David Asbjornsson's free kick from 25 yards out went just a tad wide of the left post.

Freshman David Amirani also had a couple of opportunities at 60:11 and 66:00, respectively, but was unable to put either on net. The two teams seemed to be headed for overtime for the second time in three years before Brown got on the scoreboard at 84:54.

BU recorded its eighth foul of the game, as Brown tried to push forward. The Bears' Jack Gorab curled the free kick into the box for Tariq Akeel to head in toward the left post past a diving Thomson for the victory.

Winning its fifth straight in the series, the Bears finished ahead in shots, 10-8, despite BU owning a 5-3 advantage in corners.

The Terriers will remain at home and next host UMass on Saturday (Sept. 13) at 7 p.m.
