Box Score
BOSTON -- Five different Terriers found the back of the net but the Boston University men's lacrosse team was edged by No. 19 Loyola, 8-6, on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
BU (6-6, 3-4 PL) outscored Loyola (7-6, 5-2 PL), 3-1, in the second half and held the Greyhounds without a goal in the final 17:22 of the contest. The Terriers attempted 50 shots, including 15 in the final quarter, but Loyola goalkeeper Grant Limone made 17 saves to keep the Terriers to just six goals.
Sophomore Cal Dearth led BU with two goals and an assist while freshmen Ryan Hilburn and Jack Wilson each had a goal and an assist. Freshman Greg Farris and sophomore Adam Schaal scored the other two Terrier goals.
Sam Talkow continued his strong season with a 10-of-15 performance at the faceoff X. The sophomore won the final six faceoffs of the game and collected seven ground balls. Junior Elliott Burr relieved Talkow for part of the first half and was a perfect 3-for-3 on draws. Sophomore Christian Carson-Banister made 13 saves between the pipes for the Terriers.
BU won 31 ground balls and also caused seven of the Greyhounds' 11 turnovers. Sophomore Greg Wozniak had two of those caused turnovers and also gathered two ground balls. Classmate Dominick Calisto caused one turnover and picked up three ground balls; he was one of 10 different Terriers with at least two ground balls.
Wilson opened the scoring 1:09 into the proceedings. Hilburn checked a Loyola player behind the BU cage to regain the ball and he quickly fed a wide-open Wilson in front of Limone. Wilson finished for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season.
The Greyhounds rattled off the next five goals to enter the second quarter with a four-goal lead. The Terriers scored the first two markers of the stanza to cut the deficit to just two. Wilson fed Schaal for the first one before Farris found space in the top left corner for his seventh strike of the season. Loyola closed the quarter with a pair of tallies, however, to take a 7-3 advantage into halftime.
Talkow was terrific in the third quarter, winning all four faceoffs in that 15-minute span. Despite a Loyola goal in transition early in the frame, BU cut its deficit to 8-5 after 45 minutes. Dearth factored on both Terrier goals in the quarter, scoring the first out of the midfield before feeding Hilburn on a man-up chance.
In the fourth quarter, BU outshot Loyola, 15-2, but managed just one goal thanks to Dearth with 6:41 remaining in regulation. The Terriers had several chances to cut the Loyola lead to just one, but Limone made six saves in the final 15 minutes.
BU will play its home finale on Friday night when the Terriers host Holy Cross at Nickerson Field. A win will clinch the program's first-ever berth into the Patriot League tournament. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m.
