Terriers Defeat Bucknell in Overtime, 13-12

BOSTON - Sophomore Timothy Shannehan scored just 38 seconds into overtime to lift the Boston University men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 13-12 win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
BU (6-5, 4-2 PL) and Bucknell (7-5, 3-4 PL) battled all game, with neither team leading by more than two goals throughout the contest. After a first half that ended with BU in front, 10-9, the teams combined for just five goals over the next 30 minutes, with the Bison erasing leads of 11-9 and 12-11 to force the extra session.
In overtime, Shannehan ran around the cage stopped on a dime and was able to get behind his defender and alone on goalkeeper Luke Renaud before firing home his 30th goal of the season.
Both teams made goalie switches during the contest, with graduate student Michael Allieri shining brightest for the Terriers. He entered the cage in the third quarter and made 11 saves in the second half, including a clutch stop on Bucknell's final possession of regulation, to get the teams to the extra period. For Bucknell, Renaud made eight of the Bison's 11 saves over his 42:09 of work in relief of starter Jaz Zanelli.
Shannehan led the Terriers with six points on two goals and four assists. Senior Jimmy Kohr notched his 100th career point with his first of two goals and also added an assist to end the day with three points. Freshman Peyton Forte, senior Ethan Hart and sophomore Andrew Pape each had two goals while junior Tyler Fox also found the back of the net.
Sophomore Madden Murphy dominated at the faceoff X, matching his career high with 20 faceoff wins on 25 attempts. He scooped up 11 ground balls, including one on his faceoff win in overtime, and also scored his first goal of the season.
Junior LSM Donald Varnerin was outstanding for the Terriers. He totaled five ground balls and led BU with three caused turnovers in addition to scoring his fifth goal of the campaign. Senior Connor Kehm had two cauxsed turnovers and four ground balls while junior Murphy McLaughlin recorded two caused turnovers and junior Luke Davis collected four ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hart answered Bucknell's opening goal with his first of the day to even the score at 1-1 with 8:42 left in the first quarter.
- The teams continued to trade goals, with Kohr scoring off a Shannehan assist and then reversing roles to tie the game at 3-3 with 2:07 to play.
- Murphy then gave BU its first lead off the ensuing faceoff, as he won the draw forward, scooped up the ground ball and took a hit as he fired home his first goal of the season.
- Fox then made it 5-3 on the very next possesion, but Bucknell ended the frame on a 2-0 run to create a 5-5 score entering the second quarter.
- Sophomore Daine Kostes won the opening faceoff of the second quarter and Varnerin stayed on the field as BU worked the ball into the box, eventually firing home a shot off a Shannehan feed to make it 6-5.
- Hart then pushed the advantage to 7-5, but the Bison once again scored two straight of their own to even the score at 7-7.
- With the score tied at 9-9, Pape gave BU a 10-9 halftime lead with 13 seconds left in the second quarter.
- Pape then opened the third quarter with a goal to make it an 11-9 game before Bucknell once again stormed back to equalize.
- Forte found the back of the net with 6:50 remaining in regulation to give BU a 12-11 lead, but Anthony Panetti's goal with 1:46 to go tied the game and forced overtime.
- The Terriers improved to 2-0 in overtime games this season, as BU bested Lehigh, 14-13, in overtime on March 7 in Bethlehem, Pa.
- Both overtime winners came on the first possession of the extra frame.
- Kohr and Shannehan both scored their 30th goals of the season on Saturday.
- The 11 saves by Allieri are the most the Marquette transfer has made as a Terrier.
- BU won 23 of 28 faceoffs on the afternoon, with Kostes going 2-for-2 and freshman Mike Ramirez going 1-of-1 at the X.
- Both teams forced five failed clears.
- BU won the ground ball battle, 36-24.
- BU will host Lafayette in its final home game of the regular season.
- Opening faceoff at Nickerson Field is set for 12 p.m., with the contest to be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
