Terriers Fall Short in Overtime to Lehigh, 16-15, in Patriot League First Round

BOSTON - In a game that featured nine ties and five lead changes, the No. 20/19 Boston University men's lacrosse team fell to Lehigh, 16-15, in overtime in the first round of the Patriot League tournament on Tuesday evening at Nickerson Field.
Sophomore Andrew Pape scored for the third-seeded Terriers with just under a minute left in regulation to force overtime. Each team had a possession before sixth-seeded Lehigh used a long pass to set up the winner with 52 seconds remaining in overtime.
BU jumped out to a 3-0 lead and did not let the visitors take a lead until the final goal of the opening half as the Mountain Hawks took a 7-6 advantage into the break.
The Terriers scored the first two goals of the latter half to wrest the lead back before Lehigh tallied four of the game's next five goals to go up 11-9. BU responded with the longest run of the evening, reeling off four straight goals to earn a 13-11 advantage. The Mountain Hawks outscored BU 4-1 over a five-minute stretch to claim a 15-14 lead before Pape's equalizer.
Freshman Peyton Forte tallied four goals and one assist for the Terriers while sophomore Timothy Shannehan added five assists. Senior Jimmy Kohr (3g) and junior Tyler Fox (2g, 1a) each had three-point performances.
Eight different Terriers found the back of the net on Tuesday, with seniors Sam Burns (1g, 1a), Tommy Garofalo, Ethan Hart and Charlie Howard all scoring for BU. Sophomore Ben Morris also chipped in an assist.
BU outshot Lehigh by a 56-36 margin and held a 39-34 advantage in ground balls while winning 22 of the game's 35 faceoffs, with reigning PL Faceoff Specialist of the Year Madden Murphy going 22-of-33 with nine ground balls. Graduate student Michael Allieri made 13 saves in goal for the Terriers.
Defensively, BU caused 13 of the Mountain Hawks' 14 turnovers, led by senior Connor Kehm's three caused turnovers. Kehm also recorded four ground balls. Junior SSDM Luke Davis was fantastic, notching five ground balls and also forcing a giveaway. Junior Murphy McLaughlin and senior Matt Freeman each had two caused turnovers and two ground balls while Shannehan had two caused turnovers in addition to his five assists. Sophomore Mike Luce tallied a caused turnover and also picked up three ground balls.
Lehigh was led by Luke Breslin (5g, 1a), Luke Winkler (5g) and Finn Morgan (2g, 3a). Kasey Heath recorded 14 saves.
The Terriers close their 2026 season with a record of 8-6 while Lehigh improves to 8-7 and will face top-seeded Army West Point in Friday's semifinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Forte opened the game with three straight goals, two of which were assisted by Shannehan, to give BU a 3-0 lead with 5:48 left in the opening quarter.
- The Mountain Hawks responded with three straight tallies of their own, with faceoff specialist Johnny Kidd capping the run with 37 seconds to play in the frame.
- Forte began the second quarter with his fourth strike of the evening and Burns followed with a goal at 10:57.
- Winkler and Breslin both found the back of the net to even the score at 5-5 with 5:25 left in the half, but Pape answered with his first of the night at 4:56.
- Breslin and Winkler again went back-to-back to give Lehigh its first lead of the game at 7-6, which is how the score stood at halftime.
- Kohr got on the board at 12:02 of the third quarter and Fox followed to restore the Terriers' lead, but a 3-0 run by Lehigh made it 10-8 with 5:37 left in the frame.
- The teams traded goals before Garofalo, Fox and Hart closed the quarter with three goals in a span of 1:34 to put the Terriers ahead, 12-11, entering the final 15 minutes.
- Kohr completed his hat trick with 9:24 to play, but Winkler notched two straight goals to tie the game with 6:39 to go.
- A terrific individual effort by Howard gave BU a 14-13 lead with 4:33 left.
- BU got a great stop by Allieri on a Lehigh EMO, but Morgan forced a turnover and converted a 1-on-1 chance to tie the game at 14-14.
- Winkler then scored on the next possession to make it 15-14 with 2:50 to go.
- Allieri then made a crucial stop on the ensuing Lehigh possession to set up Pape's equalizer.
- BU won the final faceoff of regulation but didn't land a shot on target.
- Lehigh opened overtime with a faceoff win but Freeman forced a turnover to set up a Terrier possession.
- The Mountain Hawks forced a shot clock violation and Heath's outlet pass set up an unstoppable goal by Breslin.
- Shannehan finished the season with a career-high 76 points thanks to career highs in goals (34) and assists (42).
- Kohr has scored a goal in 30 straight games and finished the year with a team-best 40 markers, which is the second straight season that Kohr has notched 40+ goals.
- In 49 career games, Kohr has notched 89 goals and 25 assists for 114 points.
- Forte ended his rookie campaign with 29 goals and 11 assists for 40 points, as all three Terrier starting attackmen recorded 40+ points.
- Kehm totaled 33 caused turnovers and 59 ground balls this season, all of which are career highs.
- He ended his four outstanding seasons at BU with 85 caused turnovers and 160 ground balls, which rank third and sixth all-time at BU, respectively.
- BU went 23-for-23 in the clearing game on Tuesday.
