McClain Pushes No. 14 BU Past No. 13 BC in Overtime Thriller
October 16, 2016 | Field Hockey
NEWTON, Mass. - Senior Madeline McClain scored the game's lone goal 7:12 into overtime to lift the No. 14 Boston University field hockey team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over rival Boston College on Sunday afternoon at Newton Campus Field.
THE RUNDOWN
Final Score: #14 Boston University 1, #13 Boston College 0
Records: BU (10-4), Boston College (7-7)
Location: Newton Campus Field – Newton, Mass.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless regulation, senior Madeline McClain corralled a long pass from classmate Hester van der Laan along the right side of the field and dribbled around BC netminder Audra Hampsch before finding the back of the cage on the first shot of overtime.
- Hampsch came out of the goal to challenge McClain, forcing her to the far side of the circle and allowing a BC defender to catch up to the play. McClain created space and had only the defender to beat with her shot, which was elevated to the net to end the contest.
- The result gave McClain and the rest of her fellow seniors their first win over BC, as the Eagles had won the past three meetings – all by a single goal.
- BU had two good scoring changes late in the second half but Hampsch and the BC defense were able to push the game to overtime.
- Senior Cammy Jensen made two saves – one in each half – to become the first goalkeeper to shut out BC this season.
- Hampsch made stops on four BU shots for the Eagles.
GAME NOTES
- BU doubled up BC in shots, 12-6, and held an 11-3 advantage after the 11-minute mark.
- The Terriers had six corners – all in the first half – and allowed four.
- McClain also scored the final goal in Saturday's 5-0 win over Lehigh and two of her five career goals have come against BC.
- The Terriers have now earned at least 10 wins in 13 straight seasons.
NEXT UP
- The Terriers return to action on Friday (Oct. 21) when they host Holy Cross under the lights at 7 p.m.
- The game, which is part of the Turnpike Trophy rivalry competition, will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
