BOSTON - The No. 13 Boston University field hockey team opens its final home weekend of the regular season on Friday (Oct. 21) when Holy Cross visits New Balance Field for a Turnpike Trophy contest. The Terriers will honor their eight-member senior class prior to the 7 p.m. game.
Both the Terriers and the Crusaders enter the weekend on three-game win streaks and Friday's winner will clinch a spot in the Patriot League tournament.
BU most recently posted a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory at rival Boston College on Sunday. That followed back-to-back Patriot League wins over Bucknell and Lehigh. Holy Cross is coming off a perfect 3-0 homestand, capped by a 2-1 overtime victory against Quinnipiac on Tuesday. Before that, the Crusaders vaulted up the league standings with a 1-0 double-overtime win over Bucknell and a 2-0 blanking of Lafayette.
The Terriers and Crusaders, who first met back in 1980, have faced off 20 times. BU holds a 17-2-1 advantage, which now includes 17 straight wins after going 0-2-1 in the first three meetings.
At last year's inaugural Turnpike Trophy game, Ally Hammel scored three goals and Grace Boston added two more in a 6-1 victory in Worcester. Hammel was named the game's MVP.
Holy Cross junior Maureen Connolly leads all Patriot League players in points (25) and goals (10) while BU senior Taylor Blood has a league-best six assists.
Senior Amanda Cassera has team highs in points (18) and goals (8) for the Terriers and is currently tied for seventh in career points at BU with 83 (37g, 9a).
The BU defense brings an impressive 151:52 shutout skein into Friday's tilt and two of the Patriot League's top goalkeepers will face off as BU's Cammy Jensen leads all conference netminders in goals-against average (1.20) and Holy Cross' Marcia LaPlante is tops in save percentage (.800).
