The Boston University women's ice hockey team will host No. 6 Northeastern on Friday night at Walter Brown Arena to begin a home-and-home series with the Huskies. Puck drop on Friday is set for 7 p.m.
BU (19-11-2, 16-4-2 WHEA) will honor its eight seniors prior to Friday's game. The eight skaters - Diana Bennett, Jordan Juron, Lillian Ribeirinha-Braga, Rebecca Russo, Alexis Woloschuk, assistant captain Sarah Lefort, assistant captain Dakota Woodworth and captain Kayla Tutino - have won four Hockey East tournaments, played in four NCAA tournaments, advanced to the 2013 national title game and won the 2013 Hockey East regular-season crown. In addition, the Terrier seniors have combined for 222 goals, 317 assists and 539 points.
Friday is also the 9th annual ChiliFest. Five on-campus dining halls will make five different chili recipes, with fans voting for the best one. Fans can also win prizes such as an iPad, gift cards and BU winter hats. In addition, there will be a special performance by the BU Marching Band on the ice during the second intermission.
This weekend’s series will determine which team will finish second in the Hockey East standings this season. Northeastern (25-6-1, 19-3-0 WHEA) needs just one point from the two games to claim the second seed. If BU sweeps the Huskies, the Terriers will finish second. Neither team can finish lower than third.
The Terriers are 28-12-5 all-time against the Huskies, including a 10-7-1 mark at Walter Brown Arena. BU has won seven of the last 11 contests against NU, though the Huskies have won both matchups this season. The Terriers have won the last four non-Beanpot games against Northeastern that took place in February or March.
Junior Maddie Elia is the reigning Hockey East Player of the Week and she centers one of the most productive lines in the country. Since joining left wing Rebecca Russo and right wing Rebecca Leslie, Elia has notched 13 of her 14 goals. The trio has combined for 40 goals and 64 assists for 104 points this season and six of the Terriers' 12 goals during a sweep of New Hampshire this past weekend. Elia finished the week
Russo enters the weekend with a seven-game point streak, scoring five goals and adding seven assists for 12 points in that span. Thanks in part to the longest point streak of her time at BU, Russo is enjoying a career year with 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points.
The Huskies lost two straight games, though both have been to No. 1 Boston College. Northeastern was shut out by the Eagles, 7-0, in the Beanpot title game before losing 5-3 to BC last Friday. Prior to the two BC tilts, Northeastern had won 14 straight games.
Senior Kendall Coyne leads the nation with 41 goals and is second in the NCAA with 71 points. Sophomore Denisa Krizova is seventh in the country with 49 points thanks to 17 goals and 32 assists. Junior Hayley Scamurra centers a line with Coyne and Krizova, totaling 38 points (13g, 25a) this season. Freshman goaltender Brittany Bugalski has started 22 of the 24 games in which she has appeared, going 18-5-1 with a 2.04 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage.
Following Friday's fixture, the Terriers will head to Northeastern on Saturday at 2 p.m.
