CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - After dropping the doubles point, the Boston University men's tennis team rallied for a 4-3 victory at 17-time defending NEWMAC champion MIT on Friday evening.
With their second one-point win of the season, the Terriers improve to 4-3, while the Engineers fall to 1-2.
MIT jumped out ahead by claiming a 6-0 win at line 2 and 6-4 victory at line 3 in doubles for the doubles point. Juniors Jay Leelavanich and Jake De Vries helped BU avoid the sweep with a 7-5 win in the top slot.
Leelavanich carried the momentum from the win to singles, as he posted an impressive 7-5, 6-2 victory at the top slot against Alex Cauneac, who was a four-star recruit and the top-ranked player coming out of the state of Maryland (#63 nationally) according to TennisRecruiting.net.
Classmate Mario Sandoval briefly gave BU the 2-1 advantage by posting a 6-2, 7-6(3) win at line 4, but the Engineers came back with straight-set wins at lines 2 and 3 against senior Stefan Lemire (7-6, 6-2) and junior Lucas Bombonatti (7-5, 7-6), respectively.
Facing a 3-2 deficit, a pair of freshmen led BU to victory. Satyajit Simhadri dropped just three games at No. 5 (6-2, 6-1), while Jeff Chan coasted to a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
The Terriers will remain on the road and next travel to Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 5 for a 6:30 p.m. start time.
