FLORENCE, S.C. - Kicking off its spring break trip in South Carolina, the Boston University men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision at Francis Marion Tuesday afternoon.
Using Division II scoring procedures in which every doubles match counts as a point, the Patriots (6-5) edged the Terriers (4-5) in doubles by a combined score of 25-19 to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Five of the six singles matches required a third set, as FMU pulled out the lone two-set victory at line 5.
Senior Stefan Lemire led BU with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win in the No. 2 slot, while freshman Jeff Chan held off a rally by his opponent at No. 6 for the 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 victory.
Freshman Satyajit Simhadri dropped the first set and was facing a 5-3 deficit in the second before winning four straight games en route to a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory.
Junior Jay Leelavanich also dropped the first set in the No. 1 match but came up just short, as he lost the third-set tiebreaker to All-American Richard Ashforth, who currently ranks No. 7 in the ITA Division II poll. Ashforth prevailed, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(1).
Philipp Sluga also held off junior Lucas Bombonatti at line 3 by a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-0.
