BOSTON - After three-peating as the Patriot League champion, the Boston University women's tennis team has drawn No. 16 Texas Tech in a NCAA first-round matchup set for Friday, May 13 at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas.
Led by 31st-year head coach Lesley Sheehan, the Terriers (12-8) two weeks ago captured their 25th overall conference title by first blanking a pair of opponents (Holy Cross, Bucknell) and then posting a 4-1 victory against PL tournament host Navy. They will face a Big 12 squad in the NCAAs for the second consecutive year after getting eliminated by No. 12 seed Oklahoma State, 4-0, in 2015.
Hosting a regional for the third time in four years, Texas Tech owns a 23-5 record after coming up short in the Big 12 final to No. 12 Oklahoma State (4-0). The Red Raiders claimed their second consecutive runner-up finish after earning wins against then-No. 24 Texas (4-3) and No. 35 TCU (4-1). Last year in the NCAAs, they eliminated New Mexico State (4-0) and LSU (4-2) before falling to top-seed Southern California in the Sweet 16.
BU and TTU will face off at 6 p.m. ET following the conclusion of the Mississippi State and Virginia Tech contest scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
Ranked 21st in the latest ITA poll, the Bulldogs (17-8) fell to No. 5 Vanderbilt (4-2) in the SEC quarterfinals after posting a 4-1 victory over No. 32 Arkansas. The No. 31 Hokies are 14-10 after dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 28 Wake Forest in the second round of the ACC tournament.
Friday's winners will face off in the second round on Saturday, May 14, at 5 p.m. ET.
