BU to Face UMass at Frozen Fenway 2017
June 29, 2016 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON – The Boston University men's ice hockey team will face UMass as part of Frozen Fenway 2017, a two-week series of hockey and ice skating events taking place at Fenway Park from January 4-16, 2017, as announced Wednesday by The City of Boston, Hockey East and Fenway Sports Management (FSM).
The Terriers and Minutemen will play in the first of two Hockey East doubleheaders on Saturday, Jan. 7. Game times will be announced at a later date. Boston College and Providence will also face off on Jan. 7, while Maine-UConn and New Hampshire-Northeastern will be the matchups on Jan. 14.
This will be the third time that the Terriers will skate at Fenway Park. In the inaugural Frozen Fenway on Jan. 8, 2010, the Terriers posted a 3-2 victory over archrival BC in front of 38,472 fans - the largest crowd to ever watch a college hockey game in the eastern United States. BU also faced Maine in the 2014 edition of Frozen Fenway.
"We're honored to once again be a part of Frozen Fenway," BU director of athletics Drew Marrochello said. "This is obviously a thrill for everyone involved with our men's ice hockey program and we thank Hockey East, Fenway Sports Management and the City of Boston for once again putting this special event together."
Frozen Fenway returned in 2012, highlighted by a Hockey East doubleheader involving UMass, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
"Outdoor hockey is quickly becoming a staple on Boston's winter sports calendar and we look forward to joining with Hockey East and the City of Boston to build on that tradition by bringing some of the most accomplished and talented collegiate teams in the country to compete on the ice at Fenway Park," said Boston Red Sox President Sam Kennedy.
The Terriers hold an impressive 59-11-6 (.816) record against the Minutemen, including a two-game sweep in the first round of the 2016 Hockey East playoffs. BU is undefeated in the past eight meetings against UMass (5-0-1) and is 14-2-3 against the Minutemen since the beginning of 2010.
"Hockey East and our schools could not be more excited to take the ice once again at Fenway Park," said Hockey East commissioner Joe Bertagna. "Once Frozen Fenway 2017 is complete all 12 Hockey East schools will have played an outdoor game at Fenway Park, creating once-in-a-lifetime memories for the players, students, alumni and fans."
Ticket information, along with additional Frozen Fenway games and events will be announced in the coming months. Visit redsox.com for additional Frozen Fenway schedule updates.
