BOSTON – In a matchup featuring the top two Patriot League preseason poll selections, the No. 2 Boston University men's soccer team will host the favorite American on Saturday (Oct. 1) with action slated to begin at 2 p.m.
Both squads will be looking to bounce back from identical 3-1 road defeats with the Terriers (3-3-1, 0-0-1 PL) falling at Harvard and the Eagles (4-3-3, 1-0-0 PL) falling at Georgetown this past Tuesday. BU will also try to avenge last year's PL semifinal defeat to AU and repeat the 1-0 regular-season road win that helped lead the Terriers to an NCAA at-large berth.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- The Terriers are a perfect 3-0-0 at home this year with non-conference wins over UMass (2-1), Northeastern (3-0) and Brown (2-0).
- After combining for seven goals in the first half of the first five games of the year, BU has been shut out in the first half of the last two games.
- Despite being shut out of a point for the first time this season on Tuesday at Harvard, junior Anthony Viteri owns a commanding lead on the team in both points (11) and goals (5).
- Another member of the MAC Hermann Award Watch List alongside Viteri, senior Felix De Bona tallied his third goal of the year against the Crimson to move one goal ahead of freshman Matt McDonnell.
- Senior and reigning PL Goalkeeper of the Week Matt Gilbert has combined for 18 saves in his last two games and owns a .762 save percentage and 1.40 goals against average.
- The Eagles own a winning record but are 1-2-3 on the road with a 3-1 upset victory at then-No. 25 SMU and 1-1 draw at No. 19 South Florida.
- Six AU players have recorded at least two goals this season with Joe Iraola leading the way at five with a team-high 13 points.
- Max Holdsworth owns a team-high five assists and is joined by Chris Fanet (2g,3a) at seven points.
- Goalkeeper Lucas Belanger has started all 10 contests and owns a .696 save percentage and 1.61 goals against average
- Shut out just once this season by then-No. 24 West Virginia (3-0), AU owns an 81-42 advantage over opponents in corner kicks.
- Last Meeting: Nov. 13, 2015 (PL Semis at Colgate) – American 2, BU 0
- The red-hot Eagles extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games with the help of two first-half goals and four second-half saves.
- The Terriers are 1-2-1 all-time against the Eagles in a series that started in the fall of 2013.
- BU posted a 1-0 win at AU during the regular season last year with De Bona scoring in the fourth minute on sophomore Adam Wright's cross and Gilbert posting eight saves for the shutout.
- Two years ago at Nickerson Field, the teams battled to a 0-0 draw.
