BOSTON – Just moments after American tied the game, senior Grace Boston deposited her own rebound to the boards with 5:58 left in regulation to lift the No. 25 Boston University field hockey team to a 2-1 home victory over No. 24 American on Saturday at New Balance Field.
The victory vaults the Terriers into sole possession of first place in the Patriot League standings at 3-0 and bumps their overall record to 7-5. American moves to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
How it Happened
- The Terriers took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute on a corner goal by junior Maika Akroyd and held on until the 63rd minute, when American got a corner goal of its own from Kathryn Roncoroni.
- The game-winner occurred 114 seconds later when Boston tucked a rebound inside the left post after her initial shot was saved.
- BU opened the scoring on its second of two first-half corners as senior Kali Shumock and freshman Petra Hall earned assists in setting up a shot at the top of the circle for Akroyd, whose shot deflected off a defender's stick and in for her second goal of the season.
- American had the better of the play for a long stretch in the second half and earned all three of their corners in the game after halftime.
- The game-tying goal came on the Eagles' final corner of the contest as Roncoroni corralled a direct insert from Noor Coenen and blasted a shot to the middle of the cage at the 62:08 mark.
- BU quickly regrouped and earned a corner of their own, setting up a play for junior Ally Hammel at the top of the circle.
- Boston redirected Hammel's offering at the left post and American goalkeeper Maura Jacobs made a save, but Boston pounced on the rebound and sent it in for her fourth tally of the season.
