October 9, 2017 | Men's Soccer
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After claiming a pair of shutout victories and remaining atop the Patriot League standings, the Boston University men's soccer team had a school-record four Terriers earn conference weekly honors, the league announced Monday afternoon.
BU opened with a 3-0 home win over Holy Cross and followed up with a 2-0 victory at Lafayette to claim Corvias Offensive Player, Defensive Player, Midfielder and Goalkeeper of the Week honors, only missing out on Rookie of the Week. The Terriers earned more than two in the same week for the first time since joining the conference in the summer of 2013.
Senior defender Adam Sheikali earned his second award of the season, while junior midfielder T.J. Butzke was recognized by the PL for the first time since claiming two Rookie of the Week honors in 2015. Both sophomore forward Matt McDonnell and sophomore goalkeeper Michael Bernardi received their first-ever awards with the Terriers as well.
Named Turnpike Trophy MVP this past Wednesday, Sheikali helped limit Holy Cross to seven shot attempts, including just one on net. The Atlanta, Georgia, native also helped stymie Lafayette's offense, who recorded eight shot attempts and only one corner kick. A native of Mahopac, New York, Bernardi posted five total saves with four against the Leopards, as the Terriers opened conference play with four straight shutout victories for the first time since 1993.
Butzke tallied three assists on the week to grab the team lead in helpers. The Holbrook, New York, native first set up sophomore Jerry Ozor's long goal against the Crusaders and then assisted on both second-half goals against the Leopards. McDonnell was the beneficiary of the second assist at Lafayette, as he headed in a cross for his team-leading third goal of the season. A native of Smithtown, New York, he scored the game winner against Holy Cross by converting on a penalty kick.
The Terriers (5-6-1, 4-0-0 PL) will next host PL preseason favorite Loyola Maryland (6-4-1, 3-1-0 PL) on Saturday (Oct. 14) at 4 p.m.
