BOSTON – Concluding a season-opening two-game homestand, the Boston University men's basketball team will host Albany on Monday night with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
The contest will mark a matchup featuring the No. 2 preseason selections from both the Patriot League and America East. As part of the Walmart Food Drive, fans who bring a canned good item will be able to purchase tickets at a discounted price of $5.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- The Terriers are opening a season with two home games for the second time in three years ... In 2015, BU rebounded from a heart-breaking 87-84 overtime loss to Northeastern with a 69-64 win over Albany en route to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
- After losing three starters from last year's squad, BU started two freshmen in the season opener for the first time since 2012 ... Guard Javante McCoy and forward Walter Whyte combined for 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in 53 minutes of action.
- Freshman center Sukhmail Mathon came off the bench in his debut to post a team-high five rebounds alongside sophomore Max Mahoney, who was one point shy of tying his personal best with 11 total.
- Senior Cedric Hankerson tallied 10 points against the Huskies to increase his career total to 987, 13 shy of becoming the 36th Terrier to reach the 1,000-point milestone ... Classmate and Friday's leading scorer Cheddi Mosely (12 pts.) is the next closest at 763.
- Senior Nick Havener went 4-of-7 from the field for eight points and had two blocks but foul trouble limited his time to just 17 minutes.
- In Friday's tough 65-59 loss to the Huskies, the Terriers shot 40.4 percent from the field while holding the Huskies to 40.0 FG% ... The defeat dropped the Terriers to 95-15 (.863) all-time under head coach Joe Jones in games when BU finished with a higher shooting percentage.
- Northeastern prevailed with the help of a 20-of-24 (.833) performance from the free throw line, as the Terriers finished 8-of-16 (.500) at the charity stripe ... The Huskies also limited the damage of their 18 turnovers by holding BU to just six points off the miscues while scoring 13 points off 13 Terrier turnovers.
- The Great Danes are coming off a 21-14 season, America East tournament runner-up finish and first-round CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) appearance ... They returned their top five scorers, including America East Preseason All-Conference members David Nichols (17.9 ppg) and Joe Cremo (15.8 ppg).
- Albany went 9-8 on the road compared to 11-5 last season with notable non-conference wins at Penn State, Columbia and Colgate.
- Albany opened the new year Friday at home with a thrilling 69-67 win over MAAC preseason favorite Iona ... In a similar game to BU-Northeastern, the Great Danes won despite finishing with a lower shooting percentage (44.1 FG% - 38.7 FG%) by hitting six more free throws than the Gaels.
- 6-foot-7 forward Greig Stire, who averaged 7.1 ppg and 6.0 rpg last season, had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while 6-foot-6 forward Travis Charles came up just two boards short of his own with 12 points to help Albany post a 47-27 advantage in rebounds.
- Nichols and Cremo combined for 28 points against Iona on 8-of-22 shooting.
- Albany last year averaged 71.3 ppg and 46.7 FG% while holding opponents to 65.7 ppg and 43.1 FG% ... The Great Danes also owned a positive 7.1 rebound margin and shot an impressive 75.7 percent at the charity stripe.
- The Terriers are 19-8 all-time against the Great Danes with all but the 2015 matchup coming in America East action.
- BU is riding a 10-game winning streak with the last loss occurring on the road at Albany in 2009 ... The Terriers last fell at home in 2008.
- Two years ago, current BU special assistant to the head coach John Papale ('16) torched the Great Danes with five 3-pointers and 21 points total, as the Terriers overcame a 37-34 halftime deficit for the 69-64 win ... In that contest, BU shot 46.3 percent and held Albany to 37.3 FG%.
