After spending 10 years with the Premier League's Chelsea Football Club in England, including the last six as the sporting director, Boston University men's soccer Hall of Famer Michael Emenalo ('89) has been named the new sporting director for defending Ligue 1 (France) champion AS Monaco.
Emenalo joins the 2017 Champions League semifinalists after helping Chelsea FC win three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the Champions League, the Europa League and the League Cup. He also oversaw Chelsea youth academies, winning two Youth Leagues in 2015 and 2016, respectively, after the U-21 squad won the 2014 UEFA title.
While at BU, Emenalo led the Terriers to three NCAA tournament appearances and ended his career as the university's all-time scoring leader with 36 goals and 32 assists. Recipient of the E. Ray Speare Award as the top senior student-athlete, the College of Arts & Sciences grad was also named as an All-American in 1988 and inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1998.
After graduating from Boston University in 1989 with a degree in international relations, he played professionally in Belgium and Germany before making a brief stop at England's Notts County in the mid-1990s, where he won the Anglo-Italian Cup at Wembley Stadium.
Emenalo returned to the States to play one season with the San Jose Clash. While with San Jose, he competed in the first-ever Major League Soccer (MLS) game in 1996. He returned to Europe and spent a season with the Spanish club Llieda before playing for Maccabi Tel-Aviv from 1998-2000.
On the international stage, he won 14 caps for the Nigerian National Team and played in the 1994 World Cup against Argentina and Greece. He had the distinction of becoming the first NCAA men's soccer player to compete in the World Cup for another nation.
