PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Former Boston University women's ice hockey standout Marie-Philip Poulin will captain the Canadian National Women's Team at the 2017 IIHF Women's World Championship, as announced on Thursday.
This is the second straight year in which Poulin has been selected to wear the 'C' for Canada at the World Championship. She led her country to a silver medal at the 2016 tournament. She also captained Canada at the 2016 Four Nations Cup and in a two-game series against the United States this past December.
Poulin, a 2015 graduate, will be joined on this year's roster by 2012 graduate Jenn Wakefield. The duo has enjoyed a decorated career with Canada, highlighted by a combined three Olympic gold medals. Wakefield was also part of the squad that claimed silver at the 2016 World Championship and this will be her sixth appearance for Canada at a Women's World Championship. Poulin is making her seventh appearance at this tournament.
Team Canada will begin its quest for gold on Friday against the host United States in a rematch of last year's gold-medal game. Friday's contest will take place live on NHL Network at 7:30 p.m.
