Loyola Maryland Pulls Away Late to Defeat Men's Soccer, 3-1

BALTIMORE, Md. – Clinging to a one-goal lead, Patriot League preseason favorite Loyola Maryland struck twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation to pull away and defeat the Boston University men's soccer team, 3-1, on Friday night at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
Breaking a deadlock for sole possession of third place in the PL standings, the Greyhounds improve to 7-3-1 (3-1-1 PL), while the Terriers fall to 3-7-3 (2-2-1 PL).

- The Greyhounds were on the attack early with a blocked shot attempt in the first minute and a pair of corners in the sixth.
- Finishing with seven saves, senior Mike Bernardi made an impressive diving stop on Barry Sharifi's shot at the right post at 14:00.
- Loyola got on the board first at 41:26 when TJ Walker ripped a shot and the ensuing rebound off the block went straight to Josh Fawole on the right side for a quick score.
- The side referee ruled offsides on Fawole but after meeting with the head official, the ruling was changed to let the goal stand.
- Freshman John Siracuse was pushed from behind in Loyola's box for BU's first penalty kick of the season, but his low shot attempt at the right post was saved in the 44th minute.
- In the 82nd minute, Bernardi came off his line to try to clear the ball, but Josh Fawole was able to pop the long pass over Bernardi's head and score past a BU defender for the 2-0 advantage.
- One minute later, Nico Brown broke through the backline and finished off a pass from Gabriel Carlsson to extend the lead.
- Junior Mana Chavali put the Terriers on the scoreboard by ripping a 25-yard shot at the upper right corner at 84:17.
- The Terriers had a corner kick at 87:02, but Loyola was able to get the clear and seal the victory.
- Chavali became the sixth Terrier to find the back of the net this season.
- Earning an assist on the goal, freshman Kari Petursson is now in a four-way tie for first on the team with three assists alongside senior T.J. Butzke, junior Satchel Cortet and sophomore Toti Knutsson.

- The Greyhounds recorded a 17-10 advantage in shot attempts with a 9-2 lead in corner kicks.
- Reigning PL Goalkeeper of the Year Chase Vosvick had four saves against Bernardi's seven stops to claim the victory.
- With the win, Loyola tied the all-time series, 3-3-3 … The teams are 2-2-2 since joining the PL together in the summer of 2013.
- The Terriers return home for their final non-conference game of the regular season on Tuesday (Oct. 16) to host Northeastern at 7 p.m.
- BU is 20-7-2 under head coach Neil Roberts and is currently on a six-game unbeaten streak following last year's 1-1 draw in Brookline and 3-0 home win in 2016.
