Terriers Storm Past Brown, 72-51, in Home Opener

BOSTON – Taking Case Gym for its home opener against Brown, the Boston University women's basketball team used a collective team effort to overmatch the Bears, 72-51, Monday night.

- Nia Irving opened the game with back-to-back layups before Katie Nelson shifted the momentum with a mid-court steal and took it the distance to give BU an 6-3 edge five minutes into the game.
- Nelson stayed hot, either scoring or assisting on 11 of BU's first 14 points, as the Terriers grabbed a 17-11 advantage at the end of the quarter.
- Payton Hauck opened the second frame with five straight points from the charity stripe.
- Hauck and Lauren Spearman drilled back-to-back shots from beyond-the-arc, giving the Terriers their largest lead at 32-13 with 3:21 left before the break.
- Brown crawled back to reduce the lead to 12, though BU still held firm with a 33-21 command at the half.
- The Bears chipped away to make it an eight-point game, 38-30, midway through the third.
- BU used its stifling defense to fuel its offense, reeling off a 14-3 run to close out the frame, holding the Bears to go without a field goal for the final 7:21 of the third.
- The freshmen aided the Terriers to pull away in the fourth as Ashley Sieper poured in eight points, while Chiara Tibbitt added in four to seal the win.
- Irving led all players with 12 rebounds to go with 16 points for her ninth career double-double.
- Hauck matched Irving for the team lead with 16 points.
- Nelson also reached double figures with 10 points and distributed seven assists, one more than Brown collectively had as a team.
- The Terriers assisted on 70 percent of their field goals for the night.
- BU has won back-to-back home openers for the first time since 2011-13.
- Monday marked BU's largest and first 20-point margin of victory since defeating Bucknell, 86-58, on Jan. 25, 2014.
- BU will head to Marist for a Friday night tilt on Nov. 16.
