McDonnell Hat Trick Highlights 3-3 Draw at Boston College
August 27, 2018 | Men's Soccer
NEWTON, Mass. – Highlighted by junior co-captain Matt McDonnell's first-career hat trick, the Boston University men's soccer team posted a 3-3 draw at Boston College on Monday evening in a back-and-forth slugfest.
A native of Smithtown, New York, he became the first Terrier in 10 years to record three goals in a game, as BU (0-1-1) snapped a four-game losing streak to the Eagles (1-0-1). Fellow 2017 All-Patriot League honoree Toti Knutsson assisted on two of the scores to help the Terriers record the first tie in the annual series since 1999.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- McDonnell gave notice to the Eagles in the 20th minute when unmarked headed junior Satchel Cortet's corner straight into the ground and just over the crossbar.
- He put BU on the scoreboard first at 42:34 by successfully heading Knutsson's lofted pass from the right flank over the keeper Joe Fryatt.
- Senior T.J. Butzke set up a diving McDonnell for a second goal in the 53rd minute with a low cross at the near post from the right side.
- The Eagles cut the deficit in half when Lasse Lehmann headed in a curling 25-yard free kick from Kristofer Knoradsson at 61:26.
- BC needed just nine more minutes to tie the game, 2-2, as Abe Bibas headed in Callum Johnson's corner kick.
- McDonnell claimed the hat trick at 80:25 by running down the right side and heading in Knutsson's free kick.
- With under four minutes to play in regulation, the Eagles tied the game again thanks to Simon Enstrom converting on a long throw-in from Trevor Davock in a chaotic box.
- McDonnell's hat trick was the first by a Terrier since Shaun Taylor claimed one against Colgate in a 4-2 non-conference home victory on Sept. 20, 2008.
- Knutsson earned two assists in a game for the second time in his career and first since tallying two in a 3-1 win last season at Army West Point.
- The Terriers tallied three goals against the Eagles for the first time since a 4-3 loss in 2000 ... A year prior, the teams battled to a 3-3 draw at BC in the teams' last tie against one another.
- Sophomore William Bonnelyche made his first appearance and start at keeper for the Terriers since suffering a pregame injury at American on Sept. 23, 2017 ... He tallied five saves in the contest, including one game saver 22 seconds into the second overtime when he punched a header into the crossbar.
- Fryatt had two saves in the first half for the Eagles, and Antonio Chavez Borrelli recorded two more in the final 65 minutes of action ... Borrelli made a diving save to end the first overtime on a hard shot from junior Mana Chavali, who collected a loose ball following a corner kick at the top of the key.
- The Eagles finished with a 17-14 advantage in shots despite the Terriers claiming a 6-2 lead in corner kicks.
- BC remains ahead, 27-18-9, in the all-time series dating back to 1967.
- The Terriers will return home and host UMass Lowell on Friday, Sept. 1, with a 7 p.m. start time at Nickerson Field.
- The River Hawks mark BU's second of six scheduled in-state opponents.
- BU remains ahead in the all-time series, 4-2-0, after UML claimed a 2-0 home win last season to avenge 2015's 1-0 loss at Nickerson Field.
