BOSTON – Playing in front of an energized "BU Club Sports Night" crowd, the Boston University men's basketball team hit 11 3-pointers and held Holy Cross under 40 percent shooting to claim a 68-54 victory on Wednesday night at Case Gym.
The Terriers (10-12, 3-6 PL) finished 27-of-52 (.519) from the field to snap a four-game losing streak, as the Crusaders fell to 12-10 and 3-6 in conference play. Junior
Tyler Scanlon was named Turnpike Trophy MVP after tallying 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Classmate
Max Mahoney posted a team-high 19 points and was one rebound shy of BU's second double-double in the contest.
TURNING POINT
- Owning a 30-26 halftime lead, Scanlon opened the second half with his third 3-pointer to ignite a 12-3 run capped by redshirt-freshman Alex Vilarino's 3-pointer at 16:01.
- Austin Butler hit a bomb in response, but the Crusaders were never able to cut the deficit to single digits due to shooting 30.8 percent in the final 20 minutes.
- Sophomore Javante McCoy flushed one of his four 3-pointers at 7:01 and then assisted on Mahoney's layup to grab the Terriers' largest lead of the game, 58-40.
- The Crusaders went on a brief 7-0 spurt over the next two minutes, but sophomore Andrew Petcash drained another 3-pointer to help stop any thoughts of a rally.
THE SETUP
- Butler started the game with a layup to give HC its largest lead of the game, as the Terriers responded with an 11-2 run featuring a pair of Scanlon bombs.
- Butler grabbed the Crusaders' last lead at 12:22 (12-11) on another layup, but Petcash erased the deficit with a 3-pointer following nearly three minutes of scoreless basketball.
- Mahoney took the lead for good, 18-16, at 7:44 on a layup and free throw.
- Scanlon extended the lead to 28-20 at 2:11, but Caleb Green hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final two minutes to pull the Crusaders within four (30-26) entering the locker room.
GAME NOTES
- Scanlon earned his fourth career double-double and became the third Terrier this season alongside Mahoney and freshman Jack Hemphill to hit the mark this season.
- Petcash tallied 11 points to finish in double figures for the second time this season, while McCoy tallied 14 points.
- Entering the game averaging just 6.1 made 3-pointers per game, BU finished in double figures for the fourth time this season by shooting 11-of-20 (.550) from behind the arc against a team that was holding opponents to 33.9 3FG%.
- BU out-rebounded HC, 42-18, for its largest rebounding margin of the season, five more boards than the previous high set against Elon and Emerson.
- Sophomore Sukhmail Mathon hauled in eight rebounds, just one shy of his personal best, while adding two assists and one of BU's three blocks.
- Despite committing nine more miscues (19-10), the Terriers outscored the Crusaders off turnovers, 13-9.
- Averaging 11.5 ppg, 2018 PL Defensive Player of the Year Jehyve Floyd earned four blocks but only managed four shot attempts with four turnovers and five personal fouls.
- Butler tallied a game-high 22 points, while Patrick Benzan posted 11 points and four assists.
- BU improved to 8-3 against HC since joining the Patriot League with its fifth win in six contests.
- The Terriers extended their lead in the all-sports Turnpike Trophy competition to 8-1 against the Crusaders.
