Terriers Rally for 2-2 Draw at Maine

ORONO, Maine - Sophomore Matthew Quercia scored an extra-attacker goal to send the game into overtime and help the Boston University men's ice hockey team earn a 2-2 draw at Maine on Saturday evening at Alfond Arena.

BU erased deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to come away with one point on the weekend after Maine posted a 4-2 win on Friday.

The Terriers remain at .500 with a record of 2-2-3 overall with a 1-1-2 conference mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Black Bears opened the scoring just 2:43 into the game when Tim Doherty immediately pounced on a rebound at the crease.
  • The Terriers had the game's first three power plays, including two back-to-back in the second period, but were unable to capitalize on them.
  • Freshman Trevor Zegras gave BU the equalizer it was looking for at 11:52 of the season when he found the back of the net on a breakaway, scoring while on one knee with a perfectly placed wrister over Maine goaltender Jeremy Swayman's glove.
  • Maine got a fortunate bounce early in the third to regain the lead at 2-1.
  • A shot by Adrien Bisson went off a BU stick and over BU goaltender Sam Tucker's blocker at 1:40 of the third.
  • BU pulled Tucker in favor of an extra attacker with 2:26 remaining in regulation.
  • After a right-point blast by junior David Farrance, senior Patrick Curry collected the deflected puck and put it on net, where it went off Swayman and into the crease, allowing Quercia to punch it home with 2:18 left in regulation.
  • BU has its sixth power-play chance of the game midway through overtime but could not take advantage of it and settled for the draw.
GAME NOTES
  • BU outshot Maine by a 37-25 margin.
  • Quercia had a four-point weekend with a goal and three assists.
  • Curry's assist on Quercia's goal allowed him to extend his point streak to 11 games, dating back to the start of last year's Hockey East tournament.
  • Tucker made 23 saves for the Terriers while Swayman stopped 35 BU shots.
  • Maine went 0-for-3 on the power play while killing off all six of BU's chances.
