BOSTON – Led by a five-point effort from sophomore
Chris Gray and a 12-save effort from junior
Joe McSorley, the Boston University men's lacrosse team earned its fourth straight win with a convincing 12-4 victory over Vermont on Saturday at Nickerson Field.
Gray posted his fourth hat trick of the year to lead all scorers. Senior
James Burr followed with four points on two goals and two assists while freshman
Jake Cates scored two goals for the second straight game. Senior
Brendan Homire tallied three points (1g, 2a) and two ground balls while freshman
Jett Dziama secured a career-high two points with a goal and an assist. Freshman
Matt Hilburn and senior
Michael Laviano both found the back of the net while classmate
Timmy Ley added an assist.
Junior
Reece Eddy was instrumental on defense as he matched a program record with six caused turnovers in addition to seven ground balls in one of the best games of his career. Freshman
Will Carson collected a career-high six ground balls and recorded a career-best three caused turnovers. Junior
Nicholas Ellerton gathered a career-high four ground balls and also forced a turnover.
Sophomore
Kevin Snyder was sensational at the faceoff X, winning 10 of the 14 draws he took and gathering five ground balls. He also notched his first collegiate goal when he won a faceoff and finished the play himself in the fourth quarter.
McSorley was outstanding in between the pipes, stopping 12 shots on the day in holding Vermont to its lowest scoring output of the season and matching the Terriers' program mark for lowest goals by an opponent. With the victory, BU improved to 5-1 heading into its conference schedule while Vermont dropped to 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gray opened up the scoring just 45 seconds into the game by burying a feed from Burr.
- Burr continued to facilitate, finding Dziama on a man up opportunity just one minute later.
- Gray pushed the lead to 3-0 at 10:49 when he went solo to the cage with a diving effort.
- The Terriers made it 2-for-2 on EMOs as Jake Cates ripped home his first goal of the game to make it 4-1.
- Defense was the name of the game in the second quarter until Laviano broke through by slotting home a rebound to push the lead back to three with his first goal of the season.
- Burr delivered a rocket into the top shelf 40 seconds later before Cates struck to send BU into the break with a 7-3 edge.
- Gray connected with Burr again to open the scoring in the third quarter before Hilburn converted a feed from Ley to push the lead to 9-3 at 7:10.
- The Terriers pushed their lead to seven with 5:02 to play in the third quarter thanks to Gray's final goal of the game, this one on an EMO.
- Homire's sixth strike of the season at 10:53 of the fourth quarter made it 11-3.
- After Vermont cut the deficit to 11-4, Snyder delivered the final blow by winning the ensuing faceoff and taking it the distance to put the exclamation point on the afternoon.
GAME NOTES
- BU improved to 8-0 against non-conference opponents at Nickerson Field dating back to the start of 2017.
- Saturday marked the fourth time that BU has held an opponent to four goals in program history.
- BU went 13-for-20 at the face-off X and 19-for-22 on clears.
- The Terriers held Vermont to a 19-for-27 performance in the clearing game.
- Sophomore Sean Christman was 3-for-6 with three ground balls before Snyder took over at the X.
- BU caused 17 of the Catamounts' 26 turnovers and also collected 43 ground balls.
