Women's Basketball Signs Team IMPACT’s Sophia Williams
November 12, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Community Service
BOSTON – The Boston University women's basketball team, in partnership with the nonprofit organization Team IMPACT and through sponsorship from UPPAbaby, named 12-year-old Sophia as the newest member of the program during a Zoom conference on Wednesday evening.
Although currently not able to attend practices and games in person due to COVID-19 concerns, as a member of the team Sophia will be in frequent contact with coaches and players and present at team virtual huddles and training, serving not only as a teammate but also as an inspiration.
Sophia comes to Boston University through Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit that connects kids facing serious and chronic illnesses to college athletic teams across the country. Through Team IMPACT, children with chronic illnesses are drafted onto local college athletic teams and become an official member of the team to support the child's physical, social and emotional needs.
"We are elated to have Sophia join our BU women's basketball family," said Boston University head women's basketball coach Marisa Moseley. "Her spirit and determination are exactly the kind of characteristics that will make her a wonderful addition to this program! It is with great pride we welcome Sophia to the team and to be a Terrier for life!"
Wednesday's announcement marks the fifth time the Boston University Terriers have partnered with Team IMPACT. On Oct. 4, 2019, women's soccer signed Mariana Abad of East Boston to their team while the men's lacrosse team drafted five-year old Patrick Mahoney of Jamaica Plain on March 25, 2019. The men's basketball team added seven-year-old T'Andre Cephas Harris of Dorchester on Nov. 5, 2018 and also signed then 15 year old Dylan Flynn back in the fall of 2012.
