BOSTON – The Boston University women's tennis team's recruiting class of Victoria Carlsten and Kaitlin Tan earned national acclaim from TennisRecruiting.net (TRN) on Friday, placing sixth among all mid-majors.
Authored each of the last 15 years, the TRN mid-major rankings include all colleges outside of the Power 5 (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) and the Ivy League. Overall, head coach Lesley Sheehan's recruiting efforts have been recognized in the poll 11 times, two more than the next closest team. This year's ranking marks the highest for the Terriers since they placed sixth in 2009.
Victoria Carlsten reached as high as No. 40 in TRN's individual national rankings and No. 603 in the International Tennis Federation's (ITF) junior rankings. The Malmo, Sweden, native most recently won in doubles for the fourth consecutive year at the Swedish Nationals. She also finished runner-up in singles after winning as a freshman and placing third as a sophomore. She reached the second round of the main draw in ITF's W15 Stockholm for singles this past fall after winning the ITF Kramfors High Coast Junior World Ranking Tournament J4 in singles her junior year.
"Victoria had such great recommendations, and I really look forward to having her on the team," said Sheehan. "She is an accomplished tennis player, who I know will help us not only in singles but doubles as well. I am excited to coach her."
Kaitlin Tan is rated as a five-star recruit by TRN and ranked as high as No. 32 nationally a year ago. The Tacoma, Washington, native is the No. 2 player out of the Northwest after winning the Pacific Northwest L3 tournament in both singles and doubles. She represented her region at Fed Cup each of the last three years and twice finished in the top six in singles at the 16s National Selection tournament.
"I am excited that Kaitlin will be a member of our program," said Sheehan. "She is a dedicated and strong student-athlete who will fit in well with our team. I am sure she will make an immediate impact in the lineup and look forward to working with her."
The duo will join an experienced and talented squad for the 2020-21 season, as the roster features five former five-star TRN recruits. Rising junior Shelly Yaloz claimed 2019 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and added Doubles Team of the Year accolades with rising senior Emily Kim. Both Yaloz and Kim also earned 2019 All-Conference Team honors alongside rising senior Lily Burchell.
Rising sophomore Erica Di Battista did not own a TRN ranking due to living in Canada but quickly showcased her talent during her shortened 2019-20 rookie season. She ranked as high as No. 100 nationally by the International Tennis Association (ITA) for NCAA Division I singles after opening 13-1 and captured three consecutive Patriot League Player of the Week honors. Both five-star recruits, rising seniors Katya Martens and Clemson transfer Alex Angyalosy also provided extra firepower in the lineup for a program that was hoping to compete in April for its fifth PL tournament title under Sheehan since 2014.
