BOSTON, Mass. - Junior
Sydney Johnson dropped a career-high 26 points, classmate
Maggie Pina buried a trio of three-pointers in the second half, and the Boston University women's basketball program outlasted Green Line foe Boston College 69-65 on Wednesday evening at Case Gym.
The Terriers (2-1) shot 15-for-24 (.625) from the field in the second half and limited an Eagles team (2-1) that averaged 80 points per game in their first two contests to a season-low in scoring. Neither side led by more than two points at the end of the first three quarters, but the Terriers edged the visitors 26-23 in the final frame to hang on for the win.
Johnson scored BU's first nine points in the game, and added eight in the third quarter. She finished 8-of-19 from the field and 9-for-10 from the foul line, drawing seven fouls. Pina finished with 13 points on a 5-for-7 shooting clip as the other Terrier in double figures.
Taylor Soule was the lone Eagle to reach double digits, totaling 25 points on 11 field goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johnson hit a jumper to score the game's first basket, but the Eagles responded with 11 straight points.
- Her finger roll layup through multiple BC defenders and a corner three after Durant picked off a pass at midcourt stopped the spurt, then sophomore Sophie Beneventine added a jumper to cap the first half, with BC leading 13-11.
- The Terriers opened the second with an Alex Giannaros three from the far corner. Soule converted a layup, but sophomore Caitlin Weimar dropped in an offensive rebound to give BU a 16-15 lead.
- That play started a 10-2 Terrier run, which included a pair of hook shots from Weimar and junior Annabelle Larnard, to stake BU to its largest lead, 24-17, into the two-minute mark of the half.
- Boston College answered with a 7-0 to close the stanza, leaving the game tied at 24 at the half.
- Each team came out of the break hitting four of their first six shots. Pina knocked down two triples from the wing, while Ally VanTimmeren got two buckets to fall.
- Each side continued trading baskets through the rest of the third, but Pina's three and Johnson's layup stood for a scant 43-42 edge for the Terriers at the buzzer.
- The Eagles' last lead came at the 8:02 mark in the fourth. From there, redshirt senior Emily Esposito drilled a stepback three-pointer to put BU on top 50-48.
- Halfway through the quarter, senior Riley Childs snagged a rebound off her own miss and put it back, then Johnson hit two foul shots for BU's largest lead of the night, 59-51 with less than four minutes left.
- BC crawled back to within one possession on multiple occasions, the last one 67-65 as Makayla Dickens hit a triple with less than 10 seconds left, but Childs iced the game with two foul shots as the clock read 0:00.8.
