The second-seeded Terriers opened the scoring with an early goal but the visitors quickly tied it up before getting a go-ahead goal with under 12 minutes to play.
BU will now have to wait until the NCAA tournament selections are announced next Sunday (March 21) at 7 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers got the start they were looking for as sophomore Jamie Armstrong scored off a rush just 2:17 into the contest with assists from freshmen Dylan Peterson and Nick Zabaneh.
- Lowell, however, was not down long as a redirection by Matt Brown in the left slot off a bid from John McDonald made it a 1-1 game just over two minutes after the Armstrong goal.
- BU got the first power-play chance of the contest at 12:27 of the second but was unable to regain the lead.
- The Terriers' first penalty came in the closing seconds of the second and another occurred at 4:45 of the third but the River Hawks' power play did not convert on either chance.
- A miscue behind the BU goal led to the game-winner as the puck popped out to the left circle where Brian Chambers converted an open look at 8:19 of the final period.
- The Terriers pulled goaltender Drew Commesso in favor of an extra attacker with 1:27 to play but could not come up with an equalizer.
- The loss snapped BU's impressive 12-game home winning streak in the Hockey East tournament.
- Commesso had a 27-save effort in goal for the Terriers while UMass Lowell got 16 saves from Henry Welsch.
- Sophomore Jay O'Brien had his six-game point streak come to an end.
- BU played its first playoff game at Walter Brown Arena since March 9, 2002.
