KINGSTON, R.I. - Freshman Hugrún Helgadóttir's first collegiate goal in the 11th minute held up as the winner, as the Boston University women's soccer team defeated Rhode Island, 1-0, on Sunday at the URI Soccer Complex.
BU (2-3-1) earned its sixth straight victory over Rhode Island (0-3-1) thanks to a strong defensive effort. The Terriers did not allow a single shot on target and held strong against several set pieces late in the contest.
Senior Jenna Oldham recorded her team-leading fifth assist of the season on Helgadóttir's strike. Junior Gretchen Bennett and freshman Celia Braun combined for the clean sheet, with Bennett playing the first half and Braun taking over for the final 45 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU capitalized on its first corner of the contest to open the scoring.
- Oldham delivered the ball into the box, where it fell to the feet of Helgadóttir. She took one touch before curling the ball past the outstretched arms of the keeper and into the right corner.
- The Terriers looked to double their lead in the 18th minute when senior Elle Conlin lofted a ball over the top for junior Geovanna Pereria, but the offsides flag was raised.
- URI earned three straight corners in a span of two minutes but was unable to convert on any of them.
- Freshman Morgan Fagan's attempt from distance late in the first half whistled just over the bar.
- The Rams nearly equalized with 6:40 to play in the opening half when they forced a turnover at the top of the BU box, but the shot attempt was well over the bar.
- BU had a golden chance to double its advantage with 3:30 left in the first half when sophomore Abigail McNulty darted up the left side and fizzed a cross into the box towards freshman Eileen Solomon. Solomon was unmarked in front of goal, but Faith Hutchins (three saves) was able to stop the rookie's right-footed attempt.
- Sophomore Lily Matthews generated the Terriers' first shot on target in the second half when she forced a save with a shot from just inside the top of the box in the 64th minute.
- URI had its best chance of the contest in the 69th minute, but Emma Kirkpatrick's close-range shot hit the side of the net.
- The Rams earned a free kick just outside the box in the 86th minute, but Braun helped ensure the attempt stayed out of the net.
- BU successfully defended two late URI corners to preserve the clean sheet.
