BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team held a lead for nearly 54 minutes before No. 3 Northeastern tied it late en route to a 6-3 victory on Friday afternoon at Matthews Arena.
Freshman
Callie Shanahan turned in an impressive 53-save performance - the most by a Terrier in nearly six years - and BU got goals from sophomore
Catherine Foulem and seniors
Courtney Correia and
Kaleigh Donnelly. The Terriers move to an even 9-9-4 overall with an 8-6-3 Hockey East mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers had a perfect start, jumping out to a 2-0 lead just 68 seconds into the contest.
- Correia and classmate Emma Wuthrich teamed up to force a turnover near the NU blue line, allowing Correia to skate in through the left circle and fire a shot that went off a Husky skate and in just 21 seconds into the contest.
- BU quickly took advantage of another turnover as junior Julia Nearis ended up with the puck in the right circle and had her shot saved before Foulem pounced on the rebound and had an open look that she converted at the 1:08 mark.
- The Huskies got on the board when Chloe Aurard scored off their second power-play chance of the contest at 14:51 of the opening period.
- The Terriers were able to regain a two-goal lead before the first intermission, however, as Donnelly intercepted the puck above the left circle before elevating an impressive wrister past NU Aerin Frankel with 1:14 left in the first stanza.
- The lone goal of the second period came from NU's Brooke Hobson, who one-timed a shot to the back of the net from the left dot at 10:26 to cut the BU lead to 3-2.
- The Huskies had a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:24 later in the second but Correia, senior Alex Allan and sophomore Tamara Giaquinto killed it off to maintain the one-goal cushion.
- After making 19 saves in the first period, Shanahan made 18 more in the second to allow BU to take a 3-2 lead into the third.
- NU got the equalizer it was looking for off a power play with 5:47 left in regulation as Maddie Mills slid the puck through traffic on the right side.
- Just over a minute later, the Huskies took the lead when Katy Knoll redirected a puck past Shanahan near the crease.
- After Maureen Murphy gave NU a 5-3 lead off an empty-netter, the Huskies added their third power-play marker of the contest in the final seconds to create the 6-3 final.
GAME NOTES
- Shanahan's 53 saves were the most by a Terrier since Erin O'Neil had 54 against Northeastern in the 2016 Hockey East semifinals.
- Sophomore Andi Calderone had a game-high four blocked shots.
- Frankel allowed three goals on eight shots before Gwyneth Phillips came in relief and stopped all 11 shots she faced to earn the win in goal.
- Correia led all players in faceoff wins with 15.
- BU only had two power-play chances and was unable to score on either of them.
UP NEXT
