Late Whyte Putback Lifts Men's Basketball to 72-70 Win at Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After draining 12 3-pointers, the Boston University men's basketball team used a late putback by graduate student Walter Whyte with 3.8 seconds remaining to pull out a 72-70 victory at Marist on Saturday night.
The Terriers (6-5) shot 41.4 percent from the field and limited the Red Foxes (4-5) to 38.1 FG% to avenge last season's 84-79 overtime defeat in a contest featuring eight lead changes and five ties. BU's 72 points were the second most allowed by a Marist squad that entered the contest 47th nationally in defensive scoring (62.1 ppg) and 54th in defensive FG% (39.3 FG%).
Whyte led all players with 25 points while adding a team-high eight rebounds. He shot 5-for-7 from behind the arc, as senior Ethan Brittain-Watts went a perfect 4-for-4 en route to 16 points alongside a career-tying six assists. Graduate student Fletcher Tynen posted 12 points, and junior Anthony Morales came off the bench with six points and six boards.

Netting a pair of 3-pointers, 6-foot-11 Patrick Gardner led the Red Foxes with 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Noah Harris hit seven treys on his way to 23 points. Isaiah Brickner was the third player in double figures at 10 points with seven rebounds.
DOWN THE STRETCH- Owning a 62-60 lead with 3:49 remaining, the Terriers scored six points over the next 1:30 with Tynen hitting a combined three free throws and Whyte flushing his fifth trey.
- BU though would miss its next three field goal attempts, as Marist mounted the rally.
- Harris hit a free throw and followed Javon Cooley's 3-pointer with his sixth at 27 seconds to cut the deficit to 68-67.
- After Brittain-Watts drained both free throws three seconds later, Harris went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe with 18 seconds remaining.
- Pressing hard, Marist forced a turnover on the in-bounds pass and converted on the steal with a layup to tie the game.
- Trying to score on the game's final possession, Brittain-Watts drove to the hoop and sent a contested layup off the glass that led to Whyte grabbing the offensive rebound and scoring on the putback under the hoop.
- With 3.8 seconds remaining, Marist found Harris, who went launched a shot inside the midcourt line that was off the mark for a Terrier win.
- Brittain-Watts and Whyte both netted a pair of 3-pointers to jump out to an 18-5 lead with 12:18 remaining in the first half.
- After starting 5-for-8, the Terriers hit one of their next 10, as the Red Foxes went on a 14-0 run behind three Harris 3-pointers and Gardner netting one at 8:47 to grab a 19-18 lead.
- The teams traded blows the rest of the half with Morales scoring from downtown for a 28-24 lead at 4:08, and Whyte breaking a 28-28 deadlock on a 3-pointer during BU's final possession to enter the locker room ahead, 31-28.
- Harris ignited a quick 8-0 run to start the second half with a 3-pointer, as Isaiah Brickner drove to the hoop for a layup and 36-31 lead at 17:55.
- Morales prevented Marist from extended the lead on his second trey, and Whyte later tied the game at 16:09 on a driving layup.
- Tynen followed junior Caelan Jones' 3-pointer with a layup to give BU a 51-43 lead with 11:11 remaining.
- The Red Foxes chipped away and eventually pulled within two (53-51) on two Gardner free throws at 8:52.
- Tynen contributed eight points over the next six minutes with six coming from the charity stripe, as BU grabbed a 68-60 lead before Marist mounted its final rally.
- The two-point decision was the first BU game to be decided by five points or less this season.
- Whyte reached 20+ points for the fifth time in his career. He's now just six points away from becoming the 14th Terrier to reach 1,400 points while ranking ninth all-time at 715 rebounds.
- Brittain-Watts scored in double figures for the third straight game, the longest streak of his career. He's hit the mark five times this season after accomplishing the feat four times over his first three seasons.
- Making his second start of the season, junior Miles Brewster posted a career-tying five rebounds, as the Terriers won the battle at the boards, 40-33.
- BU's bench outscored Marist, 27-6.
- The Red Foxes earned eight blocks and became the second consecutive opponent to have fewer turnovers than BU (10-6), who went the first nine games winning the turnover battle.
- The Terriers improved to 5-2 all-time against the Red Foxes.
- BU returns home to host Ivy League foe Dartmouth on Tuesday (Dec. 13) at 7 p.m.
- The Terriers earned a 65-62 road victory last season after pulling out a 78-76 home win in 2019.
