BOSTON – Squaring off against each other for the first time this season, the Boston University women's basketball program hosts Holy Cross in a battle for first place in the Patriot League standings on Wednesday (Feb. 16). Opening tip is set for 6 p.m.
Both teams enter the tilt with a 10-3 record, tied for the top spot in the table and half a game ahead of 9-3 Lehigh. With a win, the Terriers would take sole possession of first place and secure their 11th PL victory, which has occurred three other times since BU joined the league in 2013.
Holy Cross has beaten every other Patriot League foe at least once to this point. The Crusaders are 4-2 on the road in league play so far, having won three of their last four away games.
Wednesday is American Sign Language Night, as the program partners with the Wheelock College of Education and Human Development's Programs in Deaf Studies. TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU fell to American on the road, 70-57, in its most recent matchup back on Feb. 12.
- Junior Maren Durant totaled 14 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Caitlin Weimar added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
- Junior Liz Shean added 10 points as well.
- The Terriers out-rebounded the Eagles 33-22. BU has won the battle on the boards in 11 of its 13 Patriot League games, recording a league-best +9.0 rebounding margin in that span.
- BU is the only PL school that has two student-athletes averaging 10 or more rebounds per league matchup. Weimar ranks fourth at 10.4 caroms per contest, while Durant is fifth with 10.2.
- Weimar is one of four Patriot League student-athletes averaging a double-double in league action, joining Holy Cross' Avery LaBarbera, Loyola Maryland's Lex Therien, and Navy's Jennifer Coleman.
- Durant is one block away from tying Marisa Moseley for sixth place on BU's all-time list. The Winchester, Mass. native currently has 113 in 69 career games.
- Shean is currently shooting 51.9 percent from three this season. That would be a single-season three-point percentage program record (min. 25 attempts). Her teammate, junior Annabelle Larnard, sports the highest percentage at .516, set in 2019-20.
- Junior Sydney Johnson is averaging a career-best 16 points per game this year. That mark would be the highest by any Terrier in BU's Patriot League era, and the most since Chantell Alford scored 16.4 points per game in 2012-13.
- This season, BU is 8-3 at Case Gym. Since the start of the 2019-20 campaign, the Terriers are 20-4 against Patriot League foes at home.
- BU is also 10-0 this season in night games.
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
- Holy Cross shares the top spot in the standings with BU with a 10-3 Patriot League record, and are 16-8 overall.
- Most recently, the Crusaders had their three-game win streak snapped with a 66-49 setback to Bucknell last Saturday.
- As a team, Holy Cross comes into the matchup 23rd in the nation with a .266 three-point percentage defense and 26th with 55.4 points per game allowed.
- Individually, Avery LaBarbera is third in the PL with 16.8 points per league game and second with 11.4 boards per league contest. She ranks fifth in Division I with 8.3 defensive caroms per game.
- No other Crusader averages double digits in scoring, but three others drop at least eight points per game: Bronagh Power-Cassidy, Oluchi Ezemma, and Janelle Allen.
SERIES HISTORY
- Wednesday marks the 32nd all-time meeting between BU and Holy Cross.
- Though the Crusaders are 19-12 in the series, the Terriers have won six of the last seven matchups.
- This is the first meeting between the programs this year, the last unfamiliar opponent for BU to play in the campaign.
- In last year's league-only schedule, the Terriers and Crusaders battled five times, the most common foe for BU that season. BU went 4-1 in those contests.
- Johnson averaged 11.4 points on 43.9 percent shooting with 4.6 assists across the five games, while Durant averaged 10.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game while hitting 75 percent of her shots.
- The Terriers have won three of the last four duels vs. Holy Cross in Case Gym, though the Crusaders won the most recent game, 60-52.
