Softball Earns Fourth Straight Patriot League Regular Season Title in DH Split with Lehigh

BOSTON – After capturing its fourth straight Patriot League regular season title with a 4-0 victory, the Boston University softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Patriot League rival Lehigh for the home doubleheader split Saturday afternoon.

With their program and Patriot League record-breaking win streak snapped at 27 games, the Terriers move to 38-14 and 16-1 in conference play, while the Mountain Hawks now sit at 25-17-1 (14-3 PL). Before its program-best home win streak was snapped at 25 games as well, BU clinched the top seed and hosting rights for the upcoming PL tournament on May 12-14 with No. 2 Lehigh, No. 3 Army and No. 4 Colgate rounding out the list.

Junior Allison Boaz (20-4) went the distance in the first contest, collecting seven strikeouts against five hits for her seventh shutout of the season. Graduate student Marina Sylvestri broke the scoreless deadlock with a two-out RBI double to left and scored on senior Nicole Amodio's two-run blast to right.

In the second game, BU was unable to produce a clutch hit against Gabriella Nori (10-9) and stranded nine on base for its first loss since March 12. Junior Lizzy Avery (18-9) earned eight strikeouts in the circle but was undone by a three-run homer in the second to Rory Dudley.

GAME 1: BU - 4, Lehigh - 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU had two reach base with one out in both the first and second innings before Katelyn Young (14-6) got out of the jam.
  • Lehigh threatened in the third with a walk and one-out single, but Boaz shut the door with a pair of swinging strikeouts.
  • In the third, after being hit by a pitch, sophomore Lauren Keleher swiped second on Young's second consecutive strikeout and scored on Sylvestri's double.
  • Amodio next pounced on the first pitch and launched it toward right for the 3-0 lead.
  • Trying to extend the lead, graduate student Jen Horita doubled to left but ended up stranded at second in the fifth.
  • Sophomore Lauren Nett also doubled to left to start the sixth and eventually moved to third on junior Audrey Seller's sac bunt before scoring on junior Caitlin Coker's sac fly to center.
  • Keleher made a diving catch in right to end the sixth and came through in the seventh by helping the Terriers throw Brooke Cannon out at third, as Cannon tried to stretch a double into a triple.
  • Boaz sealed the shutout with a ground out and swinging strikeout.
GAME 2: Lehigh - 3, BU - 0
  • Jaelynn Chesson made a great diving catch in right to rob graduate student Marina Sylvestri of an RBI, as Keleher ended up stranded at second.
  • The Mountain Hawks carried the momentum to the second with a pair of one-out singles and then a three-run homer by Dudley that was lifted over the fence for a 3-0 lead.
  • Lehigh managed just one more hit the rest of the game against Avery, but it was all that Nori needed.
  • Senior Aliyah Huerta-Leipner doubled to right in the second with two outs before Nori earned a strikeout.
  • Sophomore Kayla Roncin doubled to right in the fourth as well to lead off but was left at third.
  • The Terriers again threatened in the fifth with back-to-back singles by Huerta-Leipner and Nett, but Nori earned a pair of fly outs and a ground out.
  • BU had one more great opportunity to rally with Roncin's single, Horita's one-out double and Amodio's hit-by-pitch.
  • Lehigh got out of the jam by first perfectly positioning Chesson in right to catch Huerta-Leipner's liner and then earning a 5-3 ground out.
  • Nori started the bottom of the seventh with a hit-by-pitch but then earned the shutout with a strike out, infield pop up and fly out to center.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
  • The Terriers earned their 12th overall conference regular season title with the last four occurring in the Patriot League.
  • Roncin combined for four hits on the day to move up into a tie-for-second all-time at BU and fifth in the PL at 76 hits.
  • With her two-run homer, Amodio moved up to ninth all-time at BU with 17 homers and tied-for-ninth at 113 RBIs.
  • Boaz's 20 wins are tied for ninth most in a season at BU.
  • BU is now 20-13 all-time against Lehigh after the Mountain Hawks snapped BU's seven-game win streak in the series.
UP NEXT
  • Terriers will honor the seven-member senior class and then wrap up the regular season against Lehigh with a 12 p.m. start.
