Softball Held Off by Louisville, No. 16 South Carolina on Final Day at Carolina Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Facing both No. 16 South Carolina and Louisville a second time, the Boston University softball team battled to the end before ultimately coming up short Saturday afternoon at Beckham Field.
With the go-ahead run at the plate in the seventh of the first game, the Cardinals (6-3) brought in a reliever to claim the save in a 5-3 decision against the Terriers (3-6). During the 6-1 loss to the Gamecocks (6-2), BU struck first in the opening inning and put a pair of runners on base in each of the last two innings.
Junior Kyomi Apalit led the way batting a combined 4-for-6 with a double and RBI. Freshman Irys Kline went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs, while senior Brooke Deppiesse also collected three hits in seven plate appearances alongside two runs scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers threatened in the first inning with both Kline and sophomore Kieren McHugh earning back-to-back one-out walks, but they ended up stranded in scoring position, as the Cardinals claimed a strike out and ground out.
- Louisville grabbed the lead in the bottom half with an infield single and RBI triple that the Cardinals tried to turn into an inside-the-park homer, but Kline in right threw to the cutoff in Coyle at first who then sent the ball to junior Livia Christopher at home for the tag.
- Christopher followed up in the second inning by throwing a Cardinal out trying to steal second and catching a pair of strikeout pitches from senior Kasey Ricard (3-3).
- Louisville broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth with with a pair of RBI singles and a double steal against Ricard followed by an RBI single against sophomore Danika Nell for the 5-0 lead.
- Trying to mount a rally, Christopher earned a two-out walk and scored on Apalit's RBI double down the left field line to get on the scoreboard in the fifth.
- After Nell retired the side in the bottom half, both McHugh and junior Kylie Doherty earned back-to-back one-out singles in the sixth, but the Cardinals ended the threat with a ground out and strikeout.
- Then in the seventh, Apalit and Deppiesse recorded a pair of two-out singles to set up Kline's RBI single helped by a defensive miscue to put the score at 5-3.
- Entering the circle for the Cardinals, Alyssa Zabala kept Kline and McHugh (reached via error) away from home by earning a line out to second.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Deppiesse gave BU the early lead by singling to right and scoring on Kline's RBI double down the left field line.
- The Gamecocks though quickly responded with two singles against sophomore Ava Johnson (0-1) followed by a walk and RBI hit-by-pitch against senior Haley Ganino.
- Nell then entered the contest with a wild pitch and two walks allowed to put the deficit at 3-1.
- With the bases loaded and zero outs, Ricard came in to earn three pop ups.
- After hitting into a double play in the second, the Gamecocks scored two more runs during the third off a two-out double against Ricard.
- In the sixth, Deppiesse and Kline led off with back-to-back singles, but South Carolina managed to throw Deppiesse out trying to advance to third base.
- The Gamecocks then followed with two strikeouts on 2-2 pitches and added an RBI walk in the bottom of the sixth against the returning Johnson to extend the lead to 6-1.
- With Coyle (1B) and sophomore Chloe Dryden (BB) on base in the top of the seventh, the Gamecocks sealed the victory with a ground out to third.
- With Sunday's game against Kennesaw State canceled due to weather, BU will next head to the Charlotte Invitational on Feb. 20-22 to face both Jacksonville and Marshall two times apiece along with the host 49ers once.
