February 20, 2026 | Softball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a doubleheader split led by four home runs, the Boston University softball team started off the Charlotte Invitational with 6-5 walk-off victory against Jacksonville and then dropped a 10-9 offensive slugfest to the hosts Friday night.
The Terriers (4-7) rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to stun the Dolphins (6-4), thanks to freshman Irys Kline's two-out grand slam. During the second contest that featured multiple lead changes, the 49ers (10-2) hit what proved to be the game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, as BU scored one run in the seventh and stranded two runners on base.
Sophomore Camryn Lyons, senior Megan Coyle, senior Brooke Deppiesse and junior Kylie Doherty all collected three hits on the day with Doherty launching two of hers over the fence in the matchup against Charlotte. Junior Kyomi Apalit earned both of her doubles in the first contest, and freshman Madolyn Coupal joined Kline with her first career homer with it taking place in the second game.
In the circle, senior Kasey Ricard (4-4) went the distance against Jacksonville and then pitched 4.1 of the six innings in relief against the 49ers.

GAME 1: Boston University - 6, Jacksonville - 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Dolphins quickly threatened in the top of the first with a single, walk and bunt single to load the bases.
- After Ricard earned a fly ball to left and a heavy downpour suspended the game for over two hours, she kept the game scoreless with a foul out and swinging strikeout.
- Apalit broke the scoreless deadlock in the fifth by hitting a lead-off double to left and scoring on Deppiesse's two-out RBI single through the left side.
- Jacksonville struck back in the sixth by taking advantage of back-to-back hit-by-pitches with a three-run homer to center and quickly retiring the side in the bottom half.
- The Dolphins added what seemed to be two insurance runs in the seventh off two hits and a walk for the 5-1 advantage.
- Coyle started the rally by singling up the middle and scoring on Apalit's RBI double to left center.
- After senior Olivia DeLong earned a one-out walk and Deppiesse singled to left with two outs, Kline blasted an 0-1 pitch to right for the walk-off grand slam.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU tried to get on the scoreboard first with Kline and Coyle recording back-to-back one-out singles, but the 49ers ended the threat with a strikeout and line out to second.
- After Teagan Ritchie homered to center against sophomore Danika Nell in the bottom of the first, the Terriers scored four runs off four hits in the second.
- With one out, sophomore Cara Edwards followed Lyons' bunt single with a double to right to set up Coupal's three-run homer to right.
- Deppiesse then doubled to center and scored the fourth run with the help of a wild pitch and Coyle's RBI grounder.
- After putting runners on the corners via walk and single against Nell, Charlotte earned an RBI single, RBI walk and RBI sac fly against Ricard to tie the game entering the thrid inning.
- Following a scoreless third, BU took advantage of Deppiesse and Kline's back-to-back walks with freshman Mary Catherine Stanley's RBI sac fly and Doherty's two-run blast to center to pull ahead, 8-4.
- The 49ers came right back with a double, one-out RBI single and two-out, two-run homer to left to cut the deficit to one.
- BU had an opportunity to extend the lead in the fifth with Lyons' lead-off single and Coupal's one-out walk, but Charlotte turned a 5-3 double play to end the threat.
- The Terriers stranded two more on base in the top of the sixth, and Charlotte retook the lead in the bottom half with back-to-back one-out singles and a three-run homer.
- Trying to mount a second rally on the day, BU earned a single and walk before scoring a run on a two-out throwing error, but the 49ers sealed the win on a swinging strikeout.
- With her first-career multi-homer performance, Doherty became just the 14th player in Patriot League history to reach 23 career homers. She also moved into a tie-for-fifth in the program record book alongside Alex Heinen ('19) and Melissa Dubay ('09) with Chiya Louie ('07) owning the program lead at 32 total.
- BU now has three Terriers to have gone yard this season after Kline and Coupal joined Doherty in accomplishing the feat.
- Ricard increased her career win total to 78 victories and strikeouts to 735, both No. 2 in the PL record book.
- With her first-career multi-extra hit game, Apalit currently owns three doubles through 11 games after earning five total a year prior over 57 appearances.
- BU will next face Jacksonville a second time on Saturday at 10 a.m. and then face Marshall in the first of two scheduled matchups at 12:30 p.m.
