Softball Drops Pair at Charlotte Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Continuing the Charlotte Invitational, the Boston University softball team fell to both Jacksonville and Marshall at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Dolphins (7-6) had a four-run burst in the second to defeat the Terriers (4-9), 4-0, and the Thundering Herd (8-7) used a pair of homers to prevail, 6-1. Both pitching staffs held the BU bats to 10 total hits with senior Brooke Deppiesse and freshman Irys Kline combining for five of them in the doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Deppiesse started off the day with a single through the left side, but Jacksonville earned two ground outs and a fly out to keep the game scoreless.
- The Dolphins also led off with a single up the middle and added a two out walk against senior Haley Ganino (0-1) but stranded both players on base with an infield pop up.
- BU threatened in the second with junior Kyomi Apalit singling up the middle and advancing to third on two walks but flew out again.
- Jacksonville then quickly put two in scoring position with the help of a hit-by-pitch, walk and sac bunt to set up a two-RBI single.
- The Dolphins added a walk and back-to-back RBI singles against sophomore Danika Nell to grab a 4-0 lead.
- Sophomore Ava Johnson went on to pitch 3.1 scoreless innings, and senior Megan Coyle added a scoreless sixth to keep Jacksonville at four runs.
- On Friday, the Terriers rallied back with five runs in the bottom of the seventh for a thrilling 6-5 victory, but on this occasion, BU only had one runner reach third the rest of the contest for the shutout loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the bottom of the first after a foul out and ground out, the Herd grabbed the lead for good against senior Kasey Ricard (4-5) with a single and RBI double to left center.
- Marshall recorded back-to-back two-out singles in the second before flying out to right.
- During the third, the Herd followed a lead-off single and one-out single with a three-run homer down the left field line for the 4-0 advantage.
- Kline and Deppiesse started the fourth with back-to-back singles to help set up junior Kylie Doherty's RBI sac fly for the Terriers' first run of the day.
- Junior Livia Christopher and freshman Madolyn Coupal earned singles in the top of the fifth with two outs, but Marshall ended the threat on a fly out to left.
- For the third straight inning, the Terriers recorded a pair of hits with Deppiesse and Coyle starting off on singles to the outfield.
- The Herd brought in Jules King, who would go on to collect her third save by retiring all six Terriers she faced.
- Marshall homered to right in the bottom of the sixth against Ganino and shortly thereafter used a bunt single plus two stolen bases to set up an RBI single against Johnson.
- BU will face Marshall one more time on Sunday at 10 a.m.
- The Herd are 4-0 in the event, having earned two wins against the host 49ers.
